The Academy of Ancient Music, the world-renowned period instrument orchestra and choir, has appointed Alexander Van Ingen as its new Chief Executive.

Alexander joins from Decca Classics where he was an Executive Producer in charge of Artists and Repertoire. At Decca, Alexander worked on some of the label’s best-selling classical albums of recent years with Nicola Benedetti, Voces8 and the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral; operatic recordings from Baroque opera premieres to ‘Simon Boccanegra’; projects with new composers such as Ola Gjeilo and Rebecca Dale; award-winning albums with Alisa Weilerstein and Benjamin Grosvenor; and the digital work of artists such as Valentina Lisitsa and Janine Jansen. Alexander has created and managed several major classical music events including collaborations with the iTunes Festival, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia, and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. With the Bowerman Charitable Trust, Alexander founded Champs Hill Records to champion the work of new artists, a label that won a Royal Philharmonic Society Award in 2014.

Alexander said: ‘The Academy of Ancient Music boasts an enviable reputation for its energy and enthusiasm, and a proud legacy of popularising period performance. I am very pleased to be working with Richard Egarr and the players and singers of the Academy of Ancient Music to develop the orchestra’s audience reach, along with their outreach and participation programmes. The AAM’s ambitious and fresh music-making is infectious, and I am greatly looking forward to this exciting new role.’

Richard Egarr, Music Director, commented: ‘We are all very excited to be working with Alex, one of the true movers and shakers working in classical music today. The AAM will grow under his leadership and we look forward to many years ahead.’

Terence Sinclair, Chairman of the Academy of Ancient Music, said: ‘The Academy is entering a very exciting phase. We recently announced the appointment of our first Hogwood Fellow, Robert Levin, and our collaboration with The Grange Festival, whose inaugural season opens this summer. We are thrilled that Alex will bring to the AAM his ideas, musicianship, and commitment to new audiences.’

Alexander was previously a client with WildKat, and so we are especially delighted with this news, and look forward to working with Alexander in the coming months.

The Academy of Ancient Music have today announced that Robert Levin will inaugurate the Hogwood Fellowship. Established in honour of the Academy of Ancient Music’s founder Christopher Hogwood, the Fellowship is designed to further the ensemble’s commitment to providing historical insight and cultural context to the music they perform.

Christopher Hogwood was once asked if he spent half his time as a musician, and the other half as a musicologist; his response was that he spent 100% of his time as both.  Setting the AAM apart from other ensembles is the creativity and spontaneity of their performances that are grounded in scholarship, with a constant exploration of music in its broadest cultural context.

Robert Levin is a consummate musician, much loved by audiences around the world as a soloist and conductor.  He is also a renowned scholar, holding positions at institutions including Harvard and Cambridge University.  He enjoyed a long and close association with Christopher Hogwood and the AAM, which continues now with Richard Egarr as Music Director. Robert’s tenure as the first Hogwood Fellow for the remainder of this season, and the 2017-18 concert season, will include performances with the orchestra. Robert will provide insights into the music the AAM perform through interviews, talks, articles and concert programme notes.

WildKat had the great privilege of attending an interview with Robert Levin in Salzburg, where he was recording Mozart’s Piano Sonatas, on the composer’s own fortepiano.

Music Director Richard Egarr commented: ‘I’m so pleased that Robert Levin will be our very first Hogwood Fellow.  I’ve worked with him for many years, and what he stands for really represents all that Christopher Hogwood stood for as well.  Robert Levin is a most incredible mind, has an encyclopedic knowledge of Mozart and Bach, and total recall over information. But not only that, he has the ability to transform this information into extraordinary live performance.’

Beyond 2017-18, Richard Egarr will be leading the process to seek out the next Hogwood Fellow. They may be a musician and musicologist like Robert, or perhaps an academic, or an artist – anyone from any discipline who can provide greater insight into the AAM’s music and music-making.

Robert Levin will next perform with the Academy of Ancient Music at the Barbican Centre’s ‘Sound Unbound’ weekend, taking place 29-30 April 2017.

2016 – what a year it has been! 

It’s been a year full of political and cultural changes and we look forward what 2017 holds in store. 

We have also had to adapt WildKat’s set up and services towards the current climate. Artists and organisations, as well as independent projects, look for even more value for money, and for smarter, more effective approaches towards reaching audiences. 2016 is the year we truly went into number crunching, exploring what and how coverage converts into ticket sales, which platform drives different types of traffic, what will guarantee a sell-out and what is worth an investment for the future. 

We have brought in a new set of Account Managers and created new roles to cater to a renewed interest in broader press and online targets. 

I am optimistic about 2017. Change always means opportunity. It means we are in motion, and the arts are the first place we will see that. I look forward to new pieces being created, new companies being formed and new ideas coming to fruition.

Thank you to all our partners, clients, journalists and the wonderful staff across all our WildKat offices. We finish the year on a high with our annual skiing trip to Austria! Let’s slide merrily into the New Year.

In 2016, WildKat PR continued to expand our roster with lots of diverse projects and campaigns, from Ancient Academy of Music to Metal’s production of Steve Reich’s Different Trains with the London Contemporary Orchestra. We also worked with a wide range of fantastic organisations on unique projects, including projects with The European Union Youth Orchestra, Help Musicians UK and Live Music Now. Also, across the Atlantic Ocean in our New York office, we began campaigns with the world-renowned The Cliburn and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Here are some highlights from our fantastic year:

In Spring 2016, Sacconi Quartet and Sacconi Chamber Music Festival returned to WildKat, and it was another very successful year for them, highlights include a 5-star review by The Guardian and also an awesome review by Financial Times. They also premiered Jonathan Dove’s ‘In Damascus’, a brand new work for Tenor and String Quartet.

In Summer 2016, another year, another weird and wonderful set of Tête a Tête performances, including Toni Castells‘ ‘2045: The Year Man Becomes Immortal?‘, which featured in The Guardian‘s top classical picks, and on BBC Radio 3: In Tune, amongst other outlets. They also ran six productions, forming part of the Cubitt Sessions at the heart of King’s Cross this year. Looking ahead to 2017, lots are going to happen in January with Tête a Tête, so keep reading our blog to follow their latest news!

In August, BitterSuite launched their crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter, and successfully reached their target. They were featured in Vice, and they also debuted in New York at Brooklyn Academy of Music in December.

In Autumn 2016, we worked with Metal Liverpool on Steve Reich’s Different Trains. We gained a huge range of alternative coverage, including The Sunday Times, live-streaming on Boiler Room, and BBC Radio 6 Music.

In Winter 2016, Ailie Robertson‘s classical debut single ‘Haven’ was a big hit, reaching No.2 on iTunes Classical Chart. She also made appearances on BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio 3: In Tune.

The Academy of Ancient Music received a very strong set of reviews for our first concert with them, recording 4 and 5 stars.  They also continue to receive excellent reviews for their disc of music by Dario Castello, which proves to be increasingly popular following the concert and broadcast and is encouraging in supporting their aim to bring neglected music to a wider audience.  We now very much look forward to the release of the second volume in 2017.

Accentus Music also has had an incredible year with us, with over 50 pieces of coverage throughout the year, and several productions nominated in several categories for the International Classical Music Awards 2017, including a CD by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and Alban Berg’s opera ‘Wozzeck’ DVD performed by Opernhaus Zürich. We look forward to further collaborations with Accentus in the new year.

We also had a great year with Dartington – this year’s festival saw musicians, writers and artists of all ages and abilities descend upon the beautiful medieval Dartington estate, to take part in courses, watch and participate in masterclasses, create new works, and attend concerts and performances, of which there were over eighty over the four week period!  We are excited to have the chance to work with them again for their International Summer School and Festival 2017, which promises to be just as, if not even more exciting.

Besides our usual Press and Promotion service, we are also developing a wider range of services. We introduced our full Social Media packages and more Creative Campaigns.

We have recently worked with ECC100, a vinyl-only record label founded by Lush, on their release of ‘Set in Stone‘, music inspired by ancient stone circles in Dorset, UK. As well as a press campaign, we also organised a creative campaign, inviting journalists and bloggers to travel on a journey through their senses, with fragrances created by Gorilla Arthouse, which were inspired by the music from the album, live performance from Simon Richmond and John Metcalfe, and the screening of a film by Patrick Dunn.

In today’s classical news, in order to break the bottleneck on the top of the charts caused by the inclusion of streaming datas, The Official Chart Company is changing the way it calculates to reflect the rise in music streaming. Academy of Ancient Music is collaborating with Mid Wales Opera and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on MWO’s tour in Wales. The Royal Northern College of Music has announced partnership with Zhejiang Conservatory of Music in Hangzhou, China. English National Opera finished its financial year with a surplus of £308,000. WildKat PR is extremely proud to announce our partnership with the Academy of Ancient Music, one of Britain’s foremost period-instrument ensembles.

Founded over 40 years ago, AAM boasts a discography of 300 recordings, and has been an associate ensemble of the Barbican Centre since 2012. It is led by Music Director Richard Egarr—who celebrates 10 years at the helm during the 2016-17 season—and regularly collaborates with celebrated scholars and performers including Robert Levin, and Alina Ibragimova.

AAM and Egarr are known for their vibrant playing—‘transmitting the kick of an energy drink’ (Financial Times)—alongside the informed and crafted approach they bring to all they do. Its principal players (including Pavlo Beznosiuk, Bojan Čičić, and Joseph Crouch) take a leading role, giving the AAM its distinctive character, with many experienced voices adding to the mix.

AAM remain at the forefront of the historically-informed performance movement, and pride themselves on sharing little-known gems with a wider audience, evidenced in their latest release, the sonatas of Dario Castello.

We look forward to working with AAM over the coming months as they look ahead to the launch of their 2017-18 season, and performances of Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s St John Passion, and Purcell’s opera King Arthur.
