Sheku Kanneh-Mason funds cello lessons at former school

The 18-year-old cellist, who has just started his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, donated £3,000 to Trinity Catholic School in Aspley, Nottingham after hearing that budget cuts could bring an end to cello teaching. The money, which was earned through playing engagements, will ensure that cello teaching continues at the school for the next three years.

In today’s classical news, Andrew Norman wins the Grawemeyer Award for Music, one of the most prestigious contemporary music prizes. Spanish National Orchestra (Orquesta Nacional de España) has appointed new concertmaster, violinist Gjorgi Dimchevski. An alleged Beethoven manuscript failed to sell at auction after its authenticity being questioned by an academic. Also, a French composer was arrested in Russia while he was attempting to settle a plagiarism claim against a Russian singer.

Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern planen neue Konzertformate

Die Festspiele warten 2017 Jahr mit neuen Formaten auf. Das spektakulärste Konzert wird nach Ansicht des Intendanten Markus Fein in Rostock zu hören sein: Schlagzeug unter Kränen. Studie: Musikmachen bei Jugendlichen im Trend

Das Musikmachen hat im Leben von Jugendlichen einen hohen Stellenwert. Dieses Fazit zog der Musikinstrumentenverband SOMM am Dienstag aus einer aktuellen Studie zum Medienumgang von 12- bis 19-Jährigen in Deutschland. Danach musizieren 21 Prozent der Jugendlichen mindestens mehrmals pro Woche selbst.

Die Festival Strings Lucerne werden als erstes Schweizer Orchester die Akustik des neuen Konzertsaals in der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg testen zu können. Am 11. Januar 2017 beginnt nach beinahe zehnjähriger Bauzeit der Spielbetrieb. Die Festival Strings Lucerne absolvieren ihr Debütkonzert am 1. Juni 2017.
