In today’s classical news, applications are now open for the 9th Sound and Music’s Summer School, which will take place from 30th July to 5th August this year. Violinist Ray Chen, former 1st prize winner at the Yehudi Menuhin and Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competitions, signs with Decca Classics. Renowned violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman will open New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s three-concert Winter Festival 2017, with a program of works by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn from January 13th to 15th. In today’s news, the Menuhin Competition names violinists for the Semi Finals, Jazz saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya died at age 81 and singer Rosie Lowe comments on the misogynistic record industry.

Menuhin Competition 2016 names 10 violinists through to the Junior Semi Finals

Each of the 10 violinists, aged between 11 and 15, will perform their choice of Beethoven Sonata and a virtuoso work. They will also collaborate with professional musicians in Dvořák’s Terzetto in C for two violins and viola.
