Tonight, pianist Kimiko Ishizaka will bring her acclaimed tour of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier to London at the 1901 Arts Club at 7:30pm.

The tour, which was received with critical praise in the USA, sees Ishizaka perform all of Volume 1 of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier. The New York Times described her as a “gifted and obviously devoted Bachian”.

Kimiko Ishizaka sprang to the attention of the public last May with the Open Goldberg Project when her recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations became available for anyone to download for free. On the first day the recording received over 200,000 listens and 50,000 downloads

Since its much anticipated release on May 28th of this year, the Open Goldberg project has gained a vast amount of attention, and press interest spanning Europe. The initiative has enabled the pianist Kimiko Ishizaka to record a new interpretation of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach, in a project entirely funded by Goldberg fans.  In the ‘Spiegel’, the project’s funding has sparked debate: unlike previous recordings, this version is free ‘for all, for ever’. It highlights the move by the Director of the project, Robert Douglass, to create a better link between classical music and the internet, which he says ‘lags behind’, requiring a ‘new way’ for classical music to be released legally and fairly.

Whilst the issue of copyright is at the core of the project, the ‘beautiful music and beautiful art’ is not to be forgotten (newsbloggers.ch) The music itself has clearly been a success, one that Jessica Duchen’s blog highlights: ‘In its first three days Open Goldberg had 200,000 listens and 50,000 downloads’. The recording quality of the release has also gained praise, with ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ noting that ‘its technical sound is on the highest level’.

The recording can be listened to on SoundCloud, and is ‘available for anyone to download, own and use without limitations’ – its greatest quality according to ‘Wired Magazine’.

Open Goldberg Variations director Robert Douglass, pianist Kimiko Ishizaka, and music notation company MuseScore have been invited to demonstrate a unique score-following technology at the Classical:NEXT conference in Munich at the end of May. In addition, Robert Douglass will be speaking on a panel discussing crowdfunding music projects.

This score-following technology, developed by SampleSumo and MuseScore, recognises the music as it is being performed and follows the score accordingly, allowing the audience to see every note being played. This development will, for the first time, bring the score to the forefront of the audience’s experience of a live concert.

The demonstration will consist of Kimiko Ishizaka playing Bach’s Goldberg Variations, with all members of the conference following the score in real-time, on their own computers, phones, or tablets, thanks to MuseScore’s technology.

Robert Douglass, the founder and director of the Open Goldberg Variations project, will also be speaking on a panel discussing the crowd-funding of music projects. The aim of the Open Goldberg Variations project is to provide a new public domain recording and score of the Goldberg Variations for anybody to listen to, copy, and use, however they like. Over 400 fans donated money towards the project via the crowd-funding website Kickstarter. The Goldberg Variations recording, made by pianist Kimiko Ishizaka, will be available as a free download for everyone in the summer.
