Job Description
WildKat PR is offering an exceptional opportunity for a motivated, intelligent, and confident individual to join our London team. Working with the Director, Head of Creative & Marketing, and fellow Account Managers on creative PR campaigns across the classical music and cultural industries, they will be expected to assist their colleagues in all aspects of the campaigns, to quickly establish an understanding of the industry and begin to build working relationships with press to generate media coverage for our clients.  This position will provide an overview of all clients, demonstrating the different stages of PR campaigns, along with a range of different styles and approaches to press. Through assisting all account managers in an array of different tasks, the intern will acquire the core skills and abilities of a publicist.  

Key duties
As an Intern your role will be:
– Summarising classical music and industry news on the WildKat PR blog each day and posting to social media
– Research-based tasks to assist Account Managers
– Updating social media for WildKat PR and our clients, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, websites
– Uploading listings to websites for clients’ upcoming concerts
– Writing blogs for our website and for clients’ websites or newsletters
– Writing and proofreading press releases for clients
– Creating and uploading interesting and new content for our social media platforms
– Recording and producing video blogs of our clients for WildKat PR YouTube
– Inviting critics, journalists, and industry contacts to concerts
– Contacting critics, journalists, bloggers, and radio or TV producers to gain features or reviews for clients
– Attending events of our clients, and possibly helping out at the events, such as selling CDs or page turning
– Daily maintenance and upkeep of the office
– Buying flowers, office stationery, kitchen supplies, etc., via petty cash
– Tidying the office before/after meetings and at end of the week
– Filing daily newspapers in storage
– Organising large CD/DVD collections

Edward Yudenich, one of the youngest conductors in the world, conducts the Student Orchestra of the State Conservatory of Music, Pashkent, Uzbekistan.
Edward became proficient in violin in one year and learned orchestral conducting in only six months. He is a student of professor Vladimir Neymer, one of Uzbekistan’s most venerated conductors.

It is stunning to watch this boy conducting Liszt’s ‘Les Préludes’ with such perfection. He has complete control over the orchestra and gives a great performance as he has the whole piece memorised.

Franz Liszt himself was a composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher. In the early 19th century he started to get recognition in Europe, especially because of his virtuosic skills as a pianist – probably the most technically advanced pianist of his era.

He is also known as one of the most prominent representatives of the ‘New German School’. He left behind an extensive and diverse body of work, which influenced his forward-looking contemporaries and anticipated some 20th-century ideas and trends.

Liszt’s notable contributions include the invention of the symphonic poem. He developed the concept of thematic transformation as part of his experiments in musical form.

His ‘Les Preludes’ is the third of his 13 symphonic poems.

With only two weeks to go, we’re very excited here at WildKat PR as we prepare for the Oxford Chamber Music Festival 2015. The festival takes place 30 September – 3 October, with concerts in Holywell Music Room, University Church of St Mary the Virgin and Merton College Chapel. The festival’s theme – ‘From a Tender Age’ – provides a fascinating programme, which explores the relationship between music and youth, and includes first opuses, first loves, early inspiration, compositions dedicated to children and the genius of Wunderkinder.

The festival’s four days are packed with diverse and exciting events, but we thought we’d draw your attention to a few highlights in particular.

Wednesday evening’s concert, Expectation and Fate, explores early influences, and begins with Steve Reich’s Different Trains – a piece inspired by his childhood train journeys. This concert also includes Vierne’s lesser-known Piano quintet op. 42, which is a memorial to his son, who was killed in WW1.

Similarly, Friday afternoon’s concert features a special arrangement of Berg’s Violin Concerto – dedicated to Alma Mahler’s daughter – “To the memory of an angel”. Other highlights include Prokofiev’s narrated Peter and the Wolf, featured in Thursday’s concert Wonderland. Through this magical story, Prokofiev captures the hopes and fears of childhood and sets each instrument as a particular character.

Saturday’s Brunch Concert combines our two favourite things – food and music – and includes Saint-Saëns’ The Elephant, Ravel’s Mother Goose and Ridout’s Ferdinand the Bull. It promises to be great fun for adults and children alike. In contrast, adolescent love is captured in Prokofiev’s Suite from Romeo and Juliet, which is part of Thursday’s evening concert, Jeunehomme/Dame.

Furthermore, in addition to works about youthfullness, the festival also combines works written by adolescents and child prodigies. These namely feature in Friday’s lunchtime concert, Early Impressions, and Friday evening’s concert Wunderkind.

This diverse festival provides a sensational programme for both old and young, and additional events – including evening drinks with supper and Saturday brunch – provide both opportunities to socialise with fellow concertgoers and the chance to meet the fantastic performers. This year artistic director Priya Mitchell will once again be joined by an exceptional group of musicians, including Ilya Gringolts, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Hugo Ticciati and leading Scandinavian cellist Torleif Thedeen. Described by the Independent as ‘an event unlike any other’, and hailed ‘a musical miracle’ by The Daily Telegraph, this festival promises to be unforgettable, and we look forward to seeing you there!

WildKat PR is thrilled to be working on our third production with Silent Opera – their production of Giovanni.

Silent Opera are a young, innovative opera company creating immersive, original and technologically challenging work in the UK. Their work reaches out to the new generation of theatre and operagoers, uniquely developing the operatic art form for the future.

Their aim is to recreate and remaster opera’s classic repertoire for a new generation, preserving its artistic quality whilst developing it for new spaces and new audiences.

A digital remastering of Mozart’s classic opera, Giovanni invites you to join him for the evening to witness his climactic, demonic and appalling downfall. An operatic orgy of drinking, lascivious tricks and tense confrontation, the audience are drawn into his most intimate circle to judge him, drink with him and condemn him in his final moments.

Hurtling opera into a modern vernacular, Silent Opera use spoken word, pre-recorded thoughts, projection and live sound manipulation to mould, blend and transform the aural sound space.

Silent Opera are also developing a unique smartphone app that will feature in Giovanni and all future productions as an interactive, creative and theatrical key into their shows.

Anyone will be available to download the ‘home’ app for free and it will feature past show material, information about Silent Opera, biographies and information about future shows. Ticket holders will also be able to download all show appropriate material to their phone, including unique pre-show content, uploads by the characters, ‘play-along’ information and reminders.

During Giovanni audience members will be able to comment, experience and play along with the story as it unfolds as well as having live sound content and video downloaded straight to their phones. They will receive off-stage character updates, motivations and locations as well as being asked the final, damning question – should Giovanni live or die?

WildKat PR is delighted to welcome the Menuhin Festival, Gstaad to its client roster.

Founded in 1957 by Yehudi Menuhin, the resident festival of the Swiss village of Gstaad boasts 50 concerts in beautiful locations including churches, mountain stations, glaciers, airfield hangars and the famous festival tent. The festival has grown substantially over its 58-year history, now excelling in both Chamber Music performances from outstanding artists such as Joshua Bell and Sabine Meyer, and symphonic brilliance from its home orchestra the Gstaad Festival Orchestra.

As well as these outstanding artists, an important part of the Menuhin Festival is a celebration of amateur musicianship and musical education. From 2008, the festival has expanded its programme of amateur orchestras and masterclasses, giving musicians the opportunity to perform within the framework of a pre-eminent international festival. The Gstaad Academy for young professionals offers customised tuition for promising professional musicians, whereas Play @ Festival Gstaad offers unique tuition and performance opportunities to keen amateurs of all ages. This year marks the launch of the Gstaad Conducting Academy, an unparalleled opportunity in the whole of Europe, offering rising young conductors the chance to work with a professional orchestra.

Last night’s Noted event hosted by WildKat PR and Sane & Able took an informative and engaging look at the world of Directing, with three professionals from the industry. These speakers included Daisy Evans – Opera Director at Silent Opera – Jude Christian – Freelance Theatre Director who has worked for the Royal Opera House Youth Opera Company and the National Theatre Studio – and Dominic Dorin – Film Director at I Owe Youth.

Discussion at the event was inspiring and helpful to people of a variety of professions that are linked into this area of the industry, ranging from those interested in Directing, to trained or aspiring actors/actresses, film producers and much more. The speakers described their differing beginnings in studying, experience and directing, and how they got to the level of success that they have reached at this stage of their careers. Daisy Evans of Silent Opera trained at the Royal Academy of Music as a singer but soon realised that she wanted to become a director, Dominic Dorin on I Owe Youth came from a background in design and found his way into film through a sound design internship and a directorship in fashion, and freelance director Jude Christian studied English at university where she started directing and then followed up this interest with a directing course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

When asked about financing their dreams and ambitions, the topic of sponsorship was raised along with some helpful ‘dos and don’ts’. Daisy suggested that the Arts Council should not be the first go to for launching a business or production, funds such as sponsorship and bursarys can be imperative for realising directing dreams and generating the finance necessary create a successful production. Jude made the important point that: “when asking people for money, be specific about what it is for”, as you are not likely to be sponsored without having made your creative aims and budget clear. Daisy added that it is important not to “think about sponsorship as money” and instead consider what resources might be useful to you such as the hiring of stage equipment or batteries. Dominic described how using creative ideas and presenting them practically can help the sponsorship process: “To help get sponsors we create beautiful story boards to help us get people on the same page visually”. It’s industry savvy thinking such as this that has aided all three of these young and successful professionals.

How do you as a Director encourage everyone involved to give their interpretation, but also retain the authority to make the final decisions? Ultimately, it seems that the actor/actress has the last say in what happens on ‘the night’ of a production in both theatre and opera as Jude pointed out in an amused tone. She made the quite practical point that as a Director you need to make it your business to get all those involved in a production on board with your aims and vision. However there is a manner in which to do this which is loaded with respect, patience and understanding amongst your ultimate authority. Dominic described how: “When you’re on set the director’s decision should be respected, but the director shouldn’t abuse that position.” The speakers agreed that is important to be authoritative, but ultimately you have to earn the respect and trust of those you are working with and the company at large.

One answer that is only born from a career of learning from success and mistakes is to the question: ‘If you could go back in time. What advice would you give yourself?’ Interestingly a variety of answers arose. A good piece of advice for those still studying came from Dominic who said that he would tell himself: “not to waste time. While you’re at uni, do as much as possible and start making decisions.” Where attitude and approach is concerned Daisy described how pacing yourself is important – be driven but try not to do everything all at once. Jude mentioned how a calm approach helps: “When I came to London I just said yes to everything. I’d definitely tell my past-self to chill out.”

The evening was not just an informative success due to the talk and excellent speakers, but the WildKat PR and Sane & Able offices were a buzz with enthusiastic arts and business individuals who have a passion for the industry and a hunger to learn more.
