It is a preposterous notion: choosing a mere five albums for a list of the year’s most remarkable, out of the dozens, even hundreds, of memorable ones that land on a music critic’s desk over 12 months. So if this collection of favorites is by no means complete, it is at least a guide to four writers’ tastes and passions.

Machine capable of composing music in style of Bach
Deep learning technology has enabled a machine to compose chorales in the style of Johann Sebastian Bach, according to researchers. Gaetan Hadjeres and Francois Pachet say their DeepBach machine is capable of creating harmonies that can easily pass as those of the 18th century composer.

Israeli luthier Amnon Weinstein receives German honour
Weinstein has been honoured with Germany’s Bundesverdienstkreuz in recognition of his ‘Violins of Hope’ project. German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented the award to the 77-year-old on Wednesday at the Jewish Museum in Berlin. ‘Behind each of your precious violins hides a human soul,’ said Steinmeier. ‘With your “Violins of Hope”, you give a voice back to these lost souls.’

Radio 3 Breakfast Carol Competition shortlist revealed
Radio 3 has revealed the shortlist for its 2016 Breakfast Carol Competition, which invited listeners to create a new Christmas carol for choir, set to the words of ‘Alleluia! A new work is come on hand’, an English text from the Middle Ages.

CBSO funding from Birmingham City Council falls to 1980s levels
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s funding from Birmingham City Council will be cut by 25% from April 2017, shaving £228,000 off the ensemble’s budget from the current year’s level. The orchestra says that this means that its public funding will drop below that currently received by any other regional symphony orchestra in the country.

Jonas Kaufmann sagt Elbphilharmonie-Eröffnung ab
Der Sänger habe sich auf Anraten seiner Ärzte “schweren Herzens” entschieden, seine Pause bis Mitte Januar zu verlängern, um sich vollständig zu erholen. Seine Partie in der Uraufführung von Wolfgang Rihms Werk “Reminiszenz” übernehme der slowakische Tenor Pavol Breslik (37).

Verspäteter Konzertbeginn in Düsseldorf: Musiker waren in Garderobe eingeschlossen
Ein Konzert in der Düsseldorfer Tonhalle konnte am vergangenen Wochenende erst mit einiger Verspätung beginnen, da das Orchester in der Garderobe eingeschlossen war. Mithilfe vereinter Kräfte von Pförtner, Orchesterwart und Hausmeister konnten die Musiker des Breslauer Kammerorchesters Leopoldinum letztlich befreit werden.

Musik zum Fest 2016: Deutsche stehen auf traditionelle Weihnachtslieder
Fast 90 Prozent der Deutschen hören am Weihnachtsabend Musik. Die Hälfte davon bevorzugt dabei traditionelle Weihnachtslieder wie „Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht“. Ebenso gern versammeln sich die Menschen zu internationalen Weihnachtssongs wie „Jingle Bells“ um den Gabentisch. Ein gutes Drittel entscheidet sich für Popsongs internationaler Stars wie Mariah Carey („All I want for Christimas is You“) oder Chris Rea („Driving Home for Christmas“). Auch klassische Musik hat ihren festen Platz in den Weihnachtszimmern.
