The finalists have been announced for the 2018 Australian National Piano Award, with 14 pianists going on to compete for $68,000 in cash and prizes in Shepparton, Victoria, in September.
Russian Mariinsky Orchestra played the inaugural concerts at the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra). The center, located in the eastern city of Dhahran, is to become a cultural hub for the Saudi Kingdom.
Violinist Leonidas Kavakos has signed to Sony Classical. His first solo project with Sony is Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Following this he will record Bach’s complete solo Sonatas and Partitas.
Lewis Graham has won the inaugural Royal College of Music (RCM) Yamaha Clarinet Prize. The prize was open to RCM students in their second year of an undergraduate music degree who had been awarded a distinction in their first-year recitals.

The winner of the Ninth Aram Khachaturian International Competition and Festival has been named as 19-year-old Andrei Ionita. Launched in Yerevan on June 6, this year’s competition focused on the cello and celebrated the 110th anniversary of its namesake, Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian.
