BACKStormzy collaborator Jules Buckley joins BBC Symphony Orchestra
A British composer known for working with the grime star Stormzy and the rock band Arctic Monkeys has been appointed to a senior role at the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Jules Buckley, 39, is joining the orchestra as creative artist in association, under the chief conductor Sakari Oramo. A former wedding singer, Buckley has previously been hailed for “ripping up the Proms textbook” by organising the Ibiza Prom in 2015 and Grime Symphony, which featured Stormzy and Wretch 32, in 2016.
Buckley is an orchestral composer, conductor and arranger. He won a Grammy for best contemporary instrumental album, and went to No 1 in the UK album charts in 2016 with Classic House, a compilation album released with the dance music DJ Pete Tong.
His tenure at the BBC Symphony Orchestra will last an initial three years.

Ein Auftritt im Saal und einer unter freiem Himmel: Mit gleich zwei Aufführungen von Ludwig van Beethovens Sinfonie Nr. 9 haben die Berliner Philharmoniker den Einstand ihres neuen Chefdirigenten Kirill Petrenko gefeiert. Nach dem Auftakt in der Philharmonie am Freitagabend spielte das Orchester – erstmals in seiner 137-jährigen Geschichte – am Samstagabend vor dem Brandenburger Tor.
Rund 35 000 Menschen lauschten bei sommerlichen Temperaturen auf der Straße des 17. Juni dem Orchester – einige sangen sogar die Europahymne mit, den Schlusschor nach Friedrich Schillers «Ode an die Freude». Das Konzert, das live im RBB-Fernsehen übertragen wurde, war Teil der Feiern zur Erinnerung an den Mauerfall vor 30 Jahren.
Für die Berliner Philharmoniker beginnt damit eine neue Ära: Vier Jahre nach seiner Wahl ist Petrenko nun offiziell Chefdirigent des Orchesters, der siebte seit seiner Gründung 1882. Die selbstverwalteten Philharmoniker hatte den Russen vor vier Jahren als Nachfolger von Simon Rattle gewählt. Petrenko kommt von der Bayerischen Staatsoper, er bleibt parallel noch bis 2020 Generalmusikdirektor in München.

À l’initiative de la Cité de la voix, l’Académie internationale des Rencontres musicales propose une formation adressée aux jeunes artistes qui se destinent à la direction de chœur. Pour encadrer leurs travaux, l’ensemble Aedes (en résidence à la Cité) et son chef, Mathieu Romano. Et pour en apprécier les fruits, des dizaines de spectateurs attentifs.
Six jeunes chefs de choeur – selon une parité parfaitement respectée – présentent ainsi à tour de rôle quelques pièces pour voix a cappella des XXe et XIXe siècle. « Un répertoire difficile, d’une grande exigence », souligne Mathieu Romano avant de laisser la place à ses jeunes étudiants : Noé Chapolard, Iris Thion-Poncet, Liochka Massabie, Aurélien Rauss, Eleonore Le Lamer et Guillemette Daboval, par ordre d’entrée en scène…
At the initiative of the Cité de la voix, the Académie internationale des Rencontres musicales offers training for young artists who are interested in choir conducting.
