BACKPhilharmonia presents 60th birthday concert for George Benjamin
The Philharmonia Orchestra is celebrating the 60th birthday of British composer and conductor George Benjamin on 5 March 2020 with a concert at London’s Southbank Centre, conducted by Benjamin himself.
With a programme celebrating Benjamin’s contribution to music, two of his own works will be at the core: his Duet for Piano and Orchestra (2008), composed for the soloist in this concert Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and his Dream of the Song (2015) featuring countertenor James Hall and the Philharmonia Voices.
Alongside his own pieces are works by composers Benjamin describes as ‘exceptionally dear to my heart, for personal as well as musical reasons’: Oliver Knussen’s Choral, and music by his teacher Olivier Messiaen. Aimard performs the song of the blue rock thrush from Catalogue d’oiseaux, and Janáček’s Sinfonietta, which was performed in the programme at the premiere of Dream of the Song, completes the programme.

Der finnische Dirigent Ari Rasilainen wäre wohl gerne noch länger Chefdirigent am Bodensee geblieben. Nun muss er schon nach fünf Jahren wieder gehen.
Der Vertrag des Chefdirigenten der Konstanzer Südwestdeutschen Philharmonie wird nicht verlängert. Das teilte die Stadt am Freitag, 31. Januar, mit. Das Orchester und die Intendanz hätten sich entschieden, das Vertragsverhältnis mit Ari Rasilainen (60) über die vereinbarte Zeit hinaus nicht zu verlängern. Der Gemeinderat sei diesem Votum gefolgt.
Der jetzige Vertrag des Chefdirigenten läuft den Angaben zufolge seit 2016 und endet im August 2021. Nähere Angaben zu den Gründen machte die Stadt zunächst nicht. Die Entscheidung sei aber keine Kritik an der künstlerischen Leistung Rasilainens, sagte die Intendantin Insa Pijanka (45) dem SWR. Ein Orchester brauche einfach regelmäßig neue Impulse. In der Saison 2021/22 sollen mögliche Nachfolge-Kandidaten die Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie dirigieren. Spätestens in der darauffolgenden Saison soll dann ein neuer Chefdirigent gefunden sein.
The contract of the chief conductor of the Konstanzer Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie will not be renewed. This was announced by the city on Friday, January 31. The orchestra and the artistic director had decided not to extend the contract with Ari Rasilainen (60) beyond the agreed time. The municipal council had followed this decision.

Né le 24 juillet 1947 à New York, Peter Serkin grandit dans un environnement musical qui le met en prise directe avec l’histoire. Il a pour père Rudolf Serkin, pianiste d’origine autrichienne qui a connu Arnold Schoenberg. Sa mère, Irene Busch, était la fille du violoniste Adolf Busch, qui a fondé un quatuor à cordes à l’activité légendaire dans les années 1920, et la nièce du chef d’orchestre Fritz Busch, qui a notamment dirigé la création d’opéras de Busoni, Weill et Hindemith.
American pianist Peter Serkin died of pancreatic cancer on Saturday, February 1, at the age of 72, at his home in New York. Sober but elegant in his interpretations, he left the image of a great stilt-walker bent over the keyboard as if to bow before the composer, from Johann Sebastian Bach to today’s creators, whose work he brought back as a distinguished servant.
Born on July 24, 1947 in New York, Peter Serkin grew up in a musical environment that put him in direct contact with history. His father was Rudolf Serkin, a pianist of Austrian origin who knew Arnold Schoenberg. His mother, Irene Busch, was the daughter of the violinist Adolf Busch, who founded a string quartet of legendary activity in the 1920s, and the niece of the conductor Fritz Busch, who, among other things, conducted the premieres of operas by Busoni, Weill and Hindemith.
