Fame at last for the world’s forgotten female composers

A database of female composers has been put online in France in an attempt to overturn what critics say is centuries of male domination of classical music.

The database, which features 4,662 works dating back to 1618 by 770 composers from 60 countries, has been funded by the French Society of Authors, Composers and Musical Producers. It was the brainchild of Claire Bodin, an award-winning harpsichordist and the creator of Présences Féminines, an annual festival dedicated to female composers.

The database is named after Clara Schumann, the 19th-century German pianist and composer who was married to the composer Robert Schumann

Elbphilharmonie reopens in September with 30 concerts

Tickets for more than 30 concerts in September – most of them in the Great Hall of Elbphilharmonie – are in presale now. All events meet the requirements in Corona times. They usually last only about an hour, have no break and, wherever possible, take place twice on the same evening. The season opening program, jointly run by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and HamburgMusik, begins on September 1 and marks the restart of concert life in Hamburg with a total of seven concerts after an almost six-month break. Other highlights during the month: The Ensemble Modern comes under the direction of George Benjamin, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra makes guest appearances on two evenings, Teodor Currentzis has developed a completely new program for his SWR Symphony Orchestra, and the Ensemble Resonanz also opens its season.

New direction, new objectives, new identity (graphic and aesthetic) with original and original events offered to all its audiences from the start of the new school year (notably four new productions and two contemporary creations as part of the MANCA Festival).

In an interview given in Nice Matin following the announcement of his nomination, Bertrand Rossi described the need to “show that opera is not an art of the past, old-fashioned and dusty. It must be proved by visionary staging.” Returning to the Opéra de Nice Côte d’Azur 20 years after his debut as stage manager and an acclaimed career at the Opéra National du Rhin, he began his first season as General Manager of the premises by signing a programme under the sign of novelty (which he had sketched out during surprising breakfasts at the opera, we were there) and youth.
