Annual fireworks concert closes Edinburgh festival

The Edinburgh International Festival has closed with its annual fireworks concert. More than four tonnes of explosives and 400,000 fireworks lit up the skies around Edinburgh Castle. The international festival has had its most successful year, taking more than £4m in ticket sales for the first time.

Stirling Orchestra tuning up for BBC competition challenge

Stirling Orchestra, which formed in 1983, is one of the five competitors in All Together Now: The Great Orchestra Challenge. The four-part BBC4 series aims to find the UK’s top amateur orchestra. Stirling made it to the final five after 250 orchestras initially entered the competition by submitting videos.

Opera Australia and the Sydney Opera House are teaming up to create a world first: a “silent opera” performed live with full orchestra and opera chorus, and 3000 audience members listening on headphones.

It has already raised eyebrows over its portrayal of Africans subjected to brutality by Fascist troops. Critics questioned the taste of including scenes of rape and racial abuse by Mussolini’s soldiers during Italy’s 1930s subjugation of Eritrea in what is a much-loved 18th century opera.
