The new General Music Director and Principal Conductor of the German National Theatre and the Staatskapelle Weimer, Stefan Solyom, conducts the stunning Eugene Onegin.

Swedish conductor Stefan Solyom is the new General Music Director and Principal Conductor of the German National Theatre and the Staatskapelle Weimar.

He celebrates his tenure in Weimar with a spectacular new production of Eugene Onegin on June 19th, which will remain in repertoire until May 2011. In 2010/11 he will conduct the Staatskapelle Weimar in five subscription series concerts and will conduct three new operatic productions at the German National Theatre – Christian Jost’s Angst, Mozart’s Le Nozze de Figaro and Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde.

Born in Sweden, Stefan Solyom has established himself as one of the country’s most exciting orchestral and operatic conductors. A pupil of Leif Segerstam and Jorma Panula, his career has led him to conduct Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Royal Swedish Opera, Munich Opera, and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra amongst others. Since 2009 Stefan has been Principal Guest Conductor of Norrköping Symphony Orchestra.

Stefan’s complete confidence in a wide range of musical genres, from comic operetta to serious symphonic works, means his 2010/11 schedule is packed with variety. In addition to the trio of new operatic productions, with the German National Theatre and the Staatskapelle Weimar he will conduct Verdi’s Rigoletto, and orchestral works by Liszt, Schumann, Schostakovitch and Stravinsky. With Norrköping Symphony his repertoire includes works ranging from Tchaikovsky and Richard Strauss to Bernstein, Stenhammer and Pettersson. Guest appearances in 2010/11 include concerts with the Lahti and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestras, the National Symphony Orchestra Tapei, and the BBC Scottish Symphony.
