Jess Gillam joins BBC Radio 3

BBC Radio 3 has today announced a number of schedule changes and new presenter signings, to include 20-year-old rising star saxophonist Jess Gillam.

A revamped Saturday schedule showcases the distinctive BBC Radio 3 musical offering and features a brand new weekly programme This Classical Life, fronted by Gillam, who recently wowed audiences at the BAFTAs.

The 20-year-old former BBC Young Musician finalist will be the youngest presenter on the station, joined each week by her contemporaries to select and discuss their favourite pieces across the musical spectrum. Confirmed guests include 22-year-old pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, double bassist Sam Becker, former BBC Introducing pianist and sound artist Belle Chen and film and TV composer Ollie HowellThis Classical Life will immediately precede Radio 3’s popular Saturday lunchtime programme Inside Music and the first episode will air on BBC Radio 3 on Saturday 6 April, as well as being available as a podcast on BBC Sounds.

Other programming announcements include Opera Fix, a four-part Classical Fix Sunday evening special presented by soprano Danielle de Niese, three-part series The Alternative Bach presented by harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, and six-part special Guitar Zone presented by guitarist Sean Shibe.


Attitude is Everything announces Accessibility Awards shortlist

Music charity Attitude is Everything have revealed the ten-category shortlist for the Outstanding Attitude Awards 2019, which recognises access provision for disabled people.

The all-access event is set to celebrate the best and most innovative live music access provision and will take place on 12 March at Islington Assembly Hall.

BST Hyde Park, Deer Shed Festival, Band on the Wall, Brudenell Social Club, Roundhouse, Ticketmaster, West End Centre (Aldershot), and Download Festival are among the shortlisted nominees.

The awards recognise large events, venues and global brands like BST Hyde Park and Ticketmaster, alongside independent festivals and venues like Deer Shed Festival and Brudenell Social Club.

Hilde Zadek stirbt mit 101 Jahren

Die Kammersängerin Hilde Zadek ist tot. Wie die Wiener Staatsoper mitteilte, starb Zadek am Donnerstag im Alter von 101 Jahren in Karlsruhe. Zadek gehörte zu den größten Sopranistinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bei der Wiener Staatsoper war sie Ehrenmitglied.

“Mit ihr hat uns nun eine weitere Staatsopernikone des 20. Jahrhunderts verlassen, eine bedeutende Künstlerin, die das Nachkriegsensemble der Staatsoper repräsentierte wie wenige, eine legendäre Pädagogin, die Generationen prägte”, sagte Staatsoperndirektor Dominique Meyer. “Wir werden Hilde Zadek – unseren Sonnenschein, wie ich sie nennen durfte – vermissen.”

The chamber singer Hilde Zadek has died at the age of 101. The director of the Vienna State Opera paid tribute to the soprano as an important artist and educator who shaped generations.

According to the Vienna State Opera, Zadek died in Karlsruhe on Thursday 21st February, at the age of 101. Zadek was one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century and an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera.
