Philharmonia Orchestra celebrates 75th anniversary in 2020

The Philharmonia Orchestra has announced details of the first part of a year of programming to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Philharmonia at 75 opens in January 2020 with a pair of concerts conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. On Thursday 16 January 2020, he will conduct a French Horn-themed programme inspired by famous French Horn players connected with the Philharmonia including Dennis Brain, Richard Watkins and Salonen himself. The programme will feature the world premiere of a new commission by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Towards Alba, a horn concerto commissioned by the Philharmonia with support from John and Carol Wates.

The second concert, taking place on Sunday 19 January 2020, presents a programme centred on music composed in 1945, the orchestra’s founding year. The programme will see Salonen conduct Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 6, Richard Strauss’ Oboe Concerto (with principal oboe Tom Blomfield) and Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements.

Toulouse: children from disadvantaged neighbourhoods join an orchestra

“I would like to learn the violin because I like the sound of this instrument,” says Hajar, a 7-year-old girl from the Soupetard district of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). For two days, we learned to dance, sing, speak sign language and also work in groups. The hosts also played musical instruments, it was great! “Hajar is one of 105 children from disadvantaged neighbourhoods or rural areas who will benefit from the Demos programme, set up by Toulouse Métropole and the Haute-Garonne departmental council, a system for social integration through music created by the Philharmonie de Paris. On Monday and Tuesday, the children aged 7 to 12 selected to join this symphony orchestra discovered this totally unknown world of classical music through a two-day workshop at the Halle aux grains concert hall. Wednesday afternoon, each group presented a “final tutti”, a small show, to show how each child learned to function with others on an exercise in rhythm, sound or body language in harmony with the music.”
