BACKMusician Stephen Morris reunited with £250,000 Tecchler violin
A 310-year-old violin worth £250,000 that was left on a train in south London has been returned to its owner. The instrument was handed over to professional musician Stephen Morris in a supermarket car park in Beckenham after secret negotiations. Plain-clothes police officers attended in case the handover went wrong, as the man who had the violin said he had made a mistake and apologised. Mr Morris said having the violin back had not yet “sunk in”. “I feel a bit battered and bruised,” he said. “I haven’t had a great deal of sleep since it went missing,” adding that he would have a beer to celebrate. The violin, which was made by master craftsman David Tecchler in 1709, was left on the London to Orpington train on 22 October when Mr Morris got out at Penge East with his bike.
MDR-Musiksommer 2020: Vorverkauf hat begonnen
Mit insgesamt 53 Konzerten präsentiert sich der 29. MDR-Musiksommer in Mitteldeutschland. Vom 6. Juni bis zum 29. August 2020 widmet sich das Festival der ganzen musikalischen Vielfalt von Klassik bis Crossover. Zu den thematischen Schwerpunkten gehören die Konzertreihen „Kulturstädte“ und „Gartenträume“ sowie das Beethoven-Jubiläum und große Chorsinfonik mit den MDR-Ensembles. Zum Eröffnungskonzert erklingt am 6. Juni in Erfurt Beethovens Missa solemnis unter der Leitung von Andrew Manze.
MDR Music Summer 2020: Advance sale has begun
With a total of 53 concerts, the 29th MDR Music Summer presents itself in Central Germany. From 6th June to 29th August 2020, the festival will be dedicated to the musical variety from classical to crossover. Topics include the concert series „culture cities” and „garden dreams” as well as the Beethoven anniversary and large choral symphonies with the MDR ensembles. The opening concert on 6th June will feature Beethoven’s missa solemnis conducted by Andrew Manze in Erfurt.

C’est un chef très apprécié par les orchestres et adoré par les chanteurs qui nous a quitté ce matin : l’Autrichien Friedemann Layer est mort à Berlin à l’âge de 78 ans. Il a mené une carrière internationale de haut vol pratiquement jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, notamment en Allemagne, en Suisse, en Autriche et en France, où il a particulièrement marqué de son empreinte l’orchestre national et l’opéra de Montpellier, qu’il a dirigé de 1994 à 2007. Grand spécialiste de l’art lyrique, curieux de tous les répertoires, Friedemann Layer a contribué à la redécouverte des œuvres peu connues, notamment dans le cadre du Festival de Radio France et Montpellier Languedoc Roussillon, dont certaines ont été gravées sur disque. René Koering, un des fondateurs du festival et son directeur artistique jusqu’en 2011, se souvient d’un « homme très distingué, extrêmement cultivé, d’un chef d’orchestre posé et calme, extrêmement poli, qui était à la fois raffiné et tout à fait apte à mener ses musiciens vers des interprétations d’une force extrême. »
Austrian conductor Friedemann Layer died
He is a conductor much appreciated by the orchestras and adored by the singers who left us this morning: the Austrian Friedemann Layer died in Berlin at the age of 78. He pursued a high-flying international career almost until the end of his life, notably in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France, where he left his mark on the Montpellier National Orchestra and Opera, which he conducted from 1994 to 2007. A great specialist in opera, curious about all repertoires, Friedemann Layer has contributed to the rediscovery of little-known works, notably as part of the Festival de Radio France and Montpellier Languedoc Roussillon, some of which have been recorded on disc. René Koering, one of the festival’s founders and artistic director until 2011, remembers “a very distinguished, extremely cultured man, a calm and calm conductor, extremely polite, who was both refined and quite capable of leading his musicians to extremely powerful performances. »
