Plácido Domingo is withdrawing from all pre-Olympics cultural events in Japan, it was announced on Friday. The 78-year-old opera singer cited the ‘complexity’ of the planned theatrical performance.
Domingo had been scheduled to take part in a performance mixing Western-style opera with Kabuki, a classical Japanese form of theatre. One of Japan’s most revered Kabuki actors, Ichikawa Ebizo XI, was due to join him on stage.

Le Roumain Cristian Macelaru nommé à la tête de l’Orchestre national de France
Le Roumain Cristian Macelaru a été nommé pour succéder à partir du 1er septembre 2021 au Français Emmanuel Krivine à la tête de l’Orchestre national de France, une des plus prestigieuses formations symphoniques du pays, a annoncé Radio France. Il dirigera l’orchestre pendant quatre ans, tandis que son prédécesseur restera le principal invité en tant que chef pour les trois saisons suivantes. Cristian Macelaru “aura pour mission de confirmer l’importance de la musique française dans le répertoire de l’orchestre et de renforcer le rayonnement et la place du National à Paris, dans les territoires ainsi qu’à l’international”, indique Radio France
“Je suis convaincu que l’art est, aujourd’hui plus que jamais, une nécessité. Car il en va ici, au-delà de ce que l’artiste montre et dit du monde, de l’émotion. Elle seule a le pouvoir de nous rassembler et de nous aider à définir notre place dans l’univers”, a déclaré le chef d’orchestre, qui souhaite “oeuvrer pour un monde plus uni, plus sensible, capable de célébrer l’humanité et nos valeurs communes”.
Romanian Cristian Macelaru appointed as Conductor of the Orchestre National de France
Romanian Cristian Macelaru has been appointed to succeed Emmanuel Krivine of France as conductor of the Orchestre national de France, one of the country’s most prestigious symphony orchestras, as of 1 September 2021, Radio France announced. He will conduct the orchestra for four years, while his predecessor will remain the main guest conductor for the next three seasons. Cristian Macelaru “will have the task of confirming the importance of French music in the orchestra’s repertoire and strengthening the influence and place of the National in Paris, in the territories and internationally”, says Radio France.
“I am convinced that art is, today more than ever, a necessity. Because it goes beyond what the artist shows and says about the world, about emotion. It alone has the power to bring us together and help us define our place in the universe,” said the conductor, who wants to “work for a more united, more sensitive world, able to celebrate humanity and our common values.
