BACKSheku Kanneh-Mason makes chart history with UK Top 10
Sheku Kanneh-Mason has become the first cellist ever to land a UK Top 10, and the first British instrumentalist in the Top 10 for over three decades (the last being Nigel Kennedy with his 1989 recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons).
Kanneh-Mason’s album Elgar, out last Friday on Decca Classics, is a new entry at No 8 in the UK artist album chart, ahead of new releases from Big Moon and Georgia. Elgar is also top of the UK Classical Artist Chart, giving the 20-year-old his second classical No 1 since the release of his debut Inspiration in 2018.

CDU-Landtagsfraktionschef Wolfgang Reinhart fordert vor einer Entscheidung über die Sanierung der Oper Stuttgart, günstigere Alternativen zu prüfen. Zwar sei der Littmann-Bau ein Wahrzeichen der Stadt, der Sanierungsbedarf sei unbestritten. Die in Rede stehende Summe von einer Milliarde Euro sei aber unglaublich hoch, sagte Reinhart in Stuttgart der Deutschen Presse-Agentur.
Eine solche Ausgabe von Steuergeld müsse man gegenüber den Bürgern gut rechtfertigen können. «Wir müssen deshalb sorgfältig im Blick halten, ob nicht auch kostengünstigere Alternativen in Betracht kommen.»
Nach den Plänen von Stadt und Land könnten die Sanierung der Oper und der Bau eines Übergangsgebäudes mehr als eine Milliarde Euro kosten. Die Bauarbeiten sollen fünf Jahre bis sieben Jahre dauern und nicht vor 2025 beginnen. Über die Pläne wird der Verwaltungsrat der Württembergischen Staatstheater in seiner nächsten Sitzung im März 2020 entscheiden. Stadt und Land als Träger der Staatstheater tragen die Kosten zu gleichen Teilen. Damit ist zusätzlich auch die Entscheidung des Stuttgarter Gemeinderats und des Landtags notwendig.

The Board of Directors of the Württemberg State Theater will decide on the plans at its next meeting in March 2020. The city and the country as the sponsors of the state theater pay the costs equally. The decision of the Stuttgart municipal council and the state parliament is also necessary.

Deux cents personnes de tous les corps de métier de l’Opéra, artistes et techniciens, ainsi que de la Comédie-Française organisaient, samedi 18 janvier, un concert devant le Palais Garnier en début d’après-midi. Une demi-heure durant, musiciens et chanteurs de l’Opéra national de Paris, qui compte 1 600 membres, ont interprété en plein air des extraits d’œuvres célèbres signées Georges Bizet ou Giuseppe Verdi, avec une Marseillaise en conclusion, devant des centaines de passants et de manifestants hostiles à la réforme. Il s’agissait de la quatrième manifestation de ce type organisée en quelques semaines. En décembre, les images d’une interprétation du Lac des cygnes sur le parvis avaient fait le tour du monde.
On strike, the Paris Opera organises a concert on its forecourt
Once again, the Paris Opera wanted to reiterate, in its own way, its opposition to pension reform. Two hundred people from all the Opera’s trades, artists and technicians, as well as from the Comédie-Française, organised a concert in front of the Palais Garnier on Saturday 18 January in the early afternoon. For half an hour, musicians and singers from the 1,600-strong Paris National Opera performed extracts from famous works by Georges Bizet and Giuseppe Verdi, with a Marseillaise as a closing act, in front of hundreds of passers-by and anti-reform demonstrators. It was the fourth demonstration of this kind to be held in a few weeks. In December, the images of an interpretation of Swan Lake on the square had gone around the world.
