Irish-born composer-conductor and Classic FM presenter, Eímear Noone, will make history in leading the orchestra at the 92nd Academy Awards.
A woman will be conducting at the Oscars for the first time on Sunday 9 February, the Academy announced today.
Eímear Noone will conduct excerpts from the five nominated scores, making her the first woman to lead the 42-piece orchestra in the history of the televised ceremony, the Academy has confirmed.
The Irish-born composer-conductor, who was written award-winning scores for World of Warcraft and Warlords of Draenor, has been described as ‘the Irish Queen of Game Music’ and is one of the video game industry’s most recognised composers.
Away from her successes on the podium, Noone also presents Classic FM’s ground-breaking show dedicated to video game music, High Score.

Die Deutsche Orchestervereinigung (DOV) hat zu Ende Juli 2020 den Haustarifvertrag der Norddeutschen Philharmonie in Rostock gekündigt. „Wir fordern für die Musikerinnen und Musiker den Volltarif der TVK-Vergütungsgruppe A. Nach geltendem Recht steht er ihnen zu“, sagte Gerald Mertens, DOV-Geschäftsführer. Alle anderen Beschäftigten am Rostocker Volkstheater erhalten bereits Volltarif.
Die Rostocker Theater-GmbH war im Zuge von Sparmaßnahmen vor einigen Jahren aus dem Deutschen Bühnenverein als Arbeitgeberverband ausgetreten. Seither gab es für das Orchester eine vom Flächentarif unabhängige Regelung, einen Haustarifvertrag.
Nach Angaben der DOV wurde in Rostock bereits vor längerer Zeit mit den Vergütungsregelungen ein Teil des Haustarifvertrags vom Arbeitgeber gekündigt. Die DOV kündigt nun den gesamten Haustarifvertrag und schafft ihn so insgesamt aus der Welt. „Damit ist der Weg frei, die den Musikerinnen und Musikern zustehende Vergütung auch mit gewerkschaftlichen Streikmaßnahmen durchzusetzen. Eine einseitige Herabstufung des Orchesters aus der Vergütungsgruppe TVK A zu B, wie sie seit längerem diskutiert wird, ist rechtswidrig und mit uns nicht zu machen“, sagt Mertens.
Norddeutsche Philharmonie in search of a collective agreement
Whether an orchestra belongs to the A or B orchestras depends on its size and decides which collective agreement applies. Provided that a regional collective agreement applies at all.
At the end of July 2020, the German Orchestra Association (DOV) terminated the in-house collective agreement of the North German Philharmonic Orchestra in Rostock. “We demand the full tariff of TVK remuneration group A for the musicians. Under current law, they are entitled to it”, said Gerald Mertens, DOV managing director. All other employees at the Rostock Volkstheater already receive full pay.
The Rostocker Theater-GmbH had left the Deutscher Bühnenverein as an employers’ association in the course of cost-cutting measures a few years ago. Since then, the orchestra has had a regulation independent of the regional collective bargaining agreement, a company collective bargaining agreement.
According to the DOV, part of the in-house collective agreement was terminated by the employer in Rostock some time ago, along with the remuneration regulations. The DOV is now terminating the entire company collective agreement, thus eliminating it altogether. “This clears the way for the musicians to enforce the remuneration to which they are entitled, including through union strike action. A unilateral downgrading of the orchestra from the remuneration group TVK A to B, as has been discussed for some time, is illegal and cannot be done with us,” says Mertens.

Les 9 et 10 mai prochains, 25 opéras ouvriront gratuitement leurs portes au public pour l’opération Tous à l’opéra ! Répétitions publiques, concerts, visites des coulisses… Dans le cadre de l’opération Tous à l’Opéra !, de multiples activités seront de nouveaux proposées en mai prochain aux amateurs d’opéra, comme aux néophytes. Ce rendez-vous conçu pour démocratiser l’art lyrique en France a attiré plus d’un million de curieux depuis sa création en 2007. Au total cette année, ce sont 25 opéras nationaux qui ont décidé d’y participer; de celui de Marseille à celui de Paris en passant par ceux de Lyon ou encore Avignon (liste complète au bas de l’article). C’est la mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes qui a été nommée marraine de l’événement. Elle donnera dans ce cadre une masterclass avec les jeunes artistes en résidence à l’Académie de l’Opéra national de Paris. Brillante chanteuse d’opéra, cette élève de Mireille Alcantara a débuté sa carrière au sein de l’Opéra de Lyon en 1998.

On May 9 and 10, 25 operas will open their doors to the public free of charge for the operation All to the Opera! Public rehearsals, concerts, backstage tours… As part of the “Tous à l’Opéra !” operation, many new activities will be offered to opera lovers and newcomers alike next May. This event, designed to democratize the art of opera in France, has attracted more than a million curious people since its creation in 2007. In total this year, 25 national opera houses have decided to take part, from the one in Marseille to the one in Paris, via those in Lyon and Avignon (complete list at the bottom of the article). Mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes was named godmother of the event. She will give a masterclass with the young artists in residence at the Académie de l’Opéra national de Paris. A brilliant opera singer, this student of Mireille Alcantara began her career with the Opéra de Lyon in 1998.
