BACKBaritone Theo Perry wins Trinity Laban Gold Medal
Trinity Laban patron HRH the Duke of Kent presented baritone Theo Perry with this year’s Gold Medal following a showcase at Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room.
The showcase, which celebrates outstanding young Trinity Laban musicians, saw seven students and recent alumni compete for the prestigious medal, performing an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary music, jazz and musical theatre.
The competition was adjudicated by Trinity Laban’s director of music Havilland Willshire, Chineke! founder Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, and president of Decca Records Rebecca Allen.

Nach jahrelangen Stellenstreichungen und Fusionen beschäftigen deutsche Berufsorchester wieder mehr Musiker. Zum ersten Mal seit der deutschen Einheit sei die Zahl der Planstellen in öffentlich geförderten Ensembles im Vergleich zur vorherigen Erhebung gestiegen – auf aktuell 9 766 Plätze. Das sind 20 Stellen mehr als 2018, wie die Deutsche Orchestervereinigung (DOV) am Dienstag in Berlin mitteilte.
Die Zahl der öffentlich geförderten Orchester blieb von 2018 bis 2020 konstant bei 129 Ensembles. Die Konsolidierung der öffentlichen Haushalte und die Bereitschaft, neue Stellen zu schaffen oder gesperrte wieder zu besetzen, sei spürbar, erklärte der DOV-Geschäftsführer Gerald Mertens.
Auch für die kommenden Jahre rechnet die Gewerkschaft der Orchestermusiker mit einem Stellenplus. Die Wertschätzung für die Arbeit der Orchester sei gestiegen. Bei der ersten gesamtdeutschen Zählung gab es 1992 noch 168 Berufsorchester. Seitdem wurden 39 Klangkörper fusioniert oder aufgelöst. Damals gab es noch 12 159 Planstellen – 20 Prozent mehr als in der Gegenwart.
More positions in German professional orchestras
After years of job cuts and mergers, German professional orchestras are once again employing more musicians. For the first time since German unification, the number of positions in publicly funded ensembles has risen compared to the previous survey – to a current total of 9,766 positions. That is 20 positions more than in 2018, the German Orchestra Association (DOV) announced in Berlin on Tuesday.
The number of publicly funded orchestras remained constant at 129 ensembles from 2018 to 2020. The consolidation of public budgets and the willingness to create new positions or to refill those that have been blocked, is noticeable, explained DOV managing director Gerald Mertens.

The National Opera of Greece, a new lease of life on the international opera scene
The opera house is located in the Cultural Centre of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, a gigantic temple on the seafront in Kallithea, a southern suburb of Athens, which also houses the National Library of Greece. The complex is located in the heart of a 17-hectare park where nearly 1,500 olive trees have been planted. Officially opened in 2017, the Athenians quickly took to this place to take a family stroll and admire the view of the Saronic Bay, or the city and the Acropolis.
