Classical music festival founded by Benjamin Britten will not go ahead for the first time in its 73-year history. The Aldeburgh festival is the latest cultural casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. The classical music event founded in 1948 by Benjamin Britten will not go ahead, it has been announced.
The festival takes place in June each yearin and around the Suffolk coastal town that Britten made his home. This year’s would have been the 73rd, and this will be the first time in its history that the event has not gone ahead. Founded by the composer Britten, tenor Peter Pears and the librettist/producer Eric Crozier, it is one of the Europe’s leading classical events – the realisation of Britten’s vision for a creative campus where musicians of all ages, backgrounds and career stages are given the time, space and support to be trained and to develop new work and ideas in a unique natural landscape.

Stuttgart – Die Corona-Krise könnte auch die Entscheidung über die milliardenteure Sanierung des Stuttgarter Opernhauses deutlich hinauszögern. Die CDU-Gemeinderatsfraktion schlägt vor, wegen der absehbaren Folgen der Krise für die öffentliche Hand einen Grundsatzbeschluss des Gemeinderates zur Oper um bis zu zwölf Monate zu verschieben.
«In einer finanziell wie wirtschaftlich unklaren Lage wie aktuell sollte der Gemeinderat keinen Grundsatzbeschluss über eine Milliarde Euro zur Sanierung der Staatsoper fassen», sagte der CDU-Fraktionschef Alexander Kotz am Montag. Zunächst müssten die finanziellen und wirtschaftlichen Folgen der Krise klar sein. «Wir könnten uns hierfür eine Verschiebung um ein Jahr vorstellen», sagte Kotz. Auch der Wettbewerb zur Neugestaltung der B14 durch die Innenstadt sei in der vorgesehenen Zeitplanung wohl nicht mehr haltbar.
CDU: Because of coronavirus, decision on opera restoration delayed
Stuttgart – The corona crisis could also significantly delay the decision on the multi-billion euro renovation of the Stuttgart opera house. The CDU local council faction is proposing to postpone a fundamental decision by the local council on the opera for up to twelve months because of the crisis’ consequences for the public sector.
“In a financially and economically unclear situation such as the current one, the municipal council should not pass a resolution in principle for one billion euros to renovate the State Opera,” said CDU faction leader Alexander Kotz on Monday. First, the financial and economic consequences of the crisis must be clear. “We could imagine a postponement of one year”, Kotz said.
