BACKBBC Proms announces Last Night amendment
The team behind the BBC Proms has announced that Lisa Batiashvili is no longer able to appear at the Last Night of the Proms (taking place this Saturday 12 September) due to illness. She will be replaced by Nicola Benedetti , who joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor Dalia Stasevska and soprano Golda Schultz.
As per the advertised programme, Nicola Benedetti will perform Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending. The Skylark (trad. arranged Stephan Konz) will no longer be performed.

Die Deutsche Orchestervereinigung hat positiv auf ein Experiment der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar reagiert, mit dem Blechbläser auch in der Corona-Zeit sicher vor Publikum musizieren können sollen. Die Hochschule hat dafür in Zusammenarbeit mit der Staatskapelle Weimar Filter für Blasinstrumente entwickelt, um den Aerosol-Ausstoß zu minimieren. “Die Deutsche Orchestervereinigung unterstützt alle Ansätze der Wissenschaft, die geeignet erscheinen, eine Rückkehr mit Vernunft und Augenmaß zu befördern”, teilte Christian Hübsch als stellvertretender Geschäftsführer der Vereinigung mit.
Vor allem große Orchester können unter den geltenden Auflagen zur Eindämmung der Corona-Pandemie bisher kaum in voller Besetzung spielen. Abstandsregeln müssen eingehalten werden, zudem gibt es Bedenken wegen des Aerosol-Ausstoßes, der gerade beim Spielen von Blasinstrumenten entsteht.

The German Orchestra Association has reacted positively to an experiment by the Bauhaus University Weimar, which aims to enable brass players to play music safely in front of an audience even in the Corona era. In cooperation with the Staatskapelle Weimar, the university has developed filters for wind instruments to minimise aerosol emissions. “The German Orchestra Association supports all scientific approaches that appear suitable for promoting a return with reason and a sense of proportion,” Christian Hübsch, Deputy Managing Director of the Association, announced.
Large orchestras in particular have so far hardly been able to play with a full orchestra under the current regulations to contain the corona pandemic. Distance rules must be observed, and there are also concerns about aerosol emissions, which are generated especially when playing wind instruments.
Brian Liao nommé chef assistant à l’Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France
Choisi parmi 110 candidats de 27 nationalités différentes, le jeune chef d’orchestre taiwanais Brian Liao [廖元宏] vient d’être nommé chef assistant à l’Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France pour la saison 2020-2021.
Depuis 2017, afin de favoriser l’insertion professionnelle des jeunes chefs d’orchestre, l’Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France organise un concours de recrutement d’un chef assistant.
Cinq candidats (trois femmes et deux hommes) ont été sélectionnés pour participer à la finale qui a eu lieu le samedi 5 septembre à la Maison de l’Orchestre à Alfortville, devant un jury composé de musiciens et collaborateurs de l’orchestre et de Case Scaglione, directeur musical de l’Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France. Agé de 28 ans, Brian Liao s’est imposé devant la jeune cheffe polonaise Agata Zajac, en dirigeant lors du dernier tour le premier mouvement de la Symphonie n°9 de Beethoven.
Brian Liao appointed assistant conductor at the Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France
Chosen from among 110 candidates of 27 different nationalities, the young Taiwanese conductor Brian Liao [廖元宏] has just been appointed assistant conductor of the Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France for the 2020-2021 season.
Since 2017, in order to promote the professional integration of young conductors, the Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France has been organising a competition for the recruitment of an assistant conductor.
Five candidates (three women and two men) were selected to take part in the final, which took place on Saturday 5 September at the Maison de l’Orchestre in Alfortville, before a jury made up of musicians and collaborators of the orchestra and Case Scaglione, Music Director of the Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France. Aged 28, Brian Liao won over the young Polish conductor Agata Zajac by conducting the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 during the final round.
