4th January: What does Brexit mean for musicians and orchestras?, NRW launches school trial for musical excellence, French musicology in mourning

Monday 4th January 2021

What does the government’s Brexit deal mean for touring musicians and orchestras?

Since the Home Office’s announcement in February 2020, we have known that EU touring artists will need a visa to perform in the UK from January 2021. But now with a Brexit deal in place, the conversation around how UK musicians will also be affected is gaining national coverage.

petition for the government to provide UK musicians with a free culture work permit is on nearly 200,000 signatures, with signatories including high-profile musicians from Louis Tomlinson to KT Tunstall, and actor and comedian Dawn French.

The petition’s creator, Tim Brennan, writes: “As a freelancer I and many like me travel through the EU countless times a year on different tours and events, this will become impossible due to cost and time if we do not have visa free travel.”

Pupils with gifted musical talent are often discovered too late and receive little support, usually because there is a lack of specialists at the schools. In the new school year, NRW wishes to make an exclamation with music profile schools.

“With the NRW Music Profile School trial, we want to discover and promote young musical talents so that they can fully develop their talents,” School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur in Düsseldorf.

French musicology in mourning

French musicology and the Paris Conservatoire have seen the death of three of the most outstanding figures in their history: Florence Badol-Bertrand, Bernard Gagnepain and Yves Gérard.

Atrocious end of the year! In less than three months, French musicology and the Paris Conservatoire have seen the death of three of the most outstanding figures in their history: three outstanding teachers who trained generations of musicians and historians, but also three leading authors, whose works will remain authoritative for a long time to come.

From 1975 to 1997, Yves Gérard taught, like a priest, in his History of Music class at the Conservatoire. His classes were a fascinating mix of musical, historical, philological and philosophical questions.
