10 January: Acosta named Birmingham Ballet Director, Handel House attracts 89,000 visitors, L’île de La Réunion crowned winners

Carlos Acosta named director of Birmingham Royal Ballet

World-renowned ballet dancer Carlos Acosta has been appointed as the new director of Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The former principal dancer with The Royal Ballet said taking the role was a “tremendous honour and privilege”.

It comes after it was announced current director David Bintley would be standing down in July 2019.

The Cuban-born dancer and choreographer will take up his appointment in January 2020 and said he wanted to “reach out to new and more diverse audiences”.

Mr Acosta also said his ambition was to expand the repertoire of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Stiftung Händel-Haus in Halle zog 89.000 Besucher an

Das Jahr 2019 war für die Stiftung Händel-Haus ein sehr erfolgreiches Jahr: Die Händel-Festspiele vom 31. Mai bis zum 16. Juni konnten mit rund 58.000 Besuchern den Besucherrekord von 2018 halten, und auch die Museumsangebote seien auf großes Interesse gestoßen, teilte die Stiftung heute mit.

So besuchten fast 30.000 Gäste die Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen im Händel-Haus und im Wilhelm-Friedemann-Bach-Haus. Die Besucher kamen aus aller Welt, u. a. aus England, Irland, Frankreich, Malta, Portugal, Tschechien, Norwegen, Mexiko, den USA, Kanada, Indien, Japan, Korea, Indonesien und Australien, um die beiden Museen der Stiftung Händel-Haus aufzusuchen. Die Besucherzahl blieb gegenüber 2018 mit mehr als 30.500 Besuchern, 2017 mit mehr als 31.500 und 2016 mit 30.200 Gästen nahezu konstant.

Handel House Foundation in Halle attracted 89,000 visitors

2019 was a very successful year for the Handel House Foundation: the Handel Festival from 31 May to 16 June attracted around 58,000 visitors, a record number for 2018, and the museum’s offerings also met with great interest, the Foundation announced today.

Almost 30,000 guests visited the exhibitions and events in the Handel House and Wilhelm-Friedemann-Bach House. The visitors came from all over the world, including England, Ireland, France, Malta, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Norway, Mexico, the USA, Canada, India, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Australia, to visit the two museums of the Handel House Foundation. The number of visitors remained almost constant compared to 2018 with more than 30,500 visitors, 2017 with more than 31,500 and 2016 with 30,200 guests.

L’île de La Réunion sacrée au concours Voix des Outre-mer

Fabrice Di Falco peut souffler. Malgré les grèves et les annulations de spectacles, la finale 2020 du concours Voix des Outre-mer a bien eu lieu comme prévu à l’Opéra Bastille le 8 janvier. «Je remercie la direction de l’Opéra d’avoir rendu ce moment possible», dit-il.

Mercredi, les quatorze finalistes de cette année, de 14 à 36 ans, originaires de Martinique, Guyane, Réunion ou de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, ont ainsi pu livrer un aperçu de leurs talents devant le prestigieux jury de cette seconde édition. Parmi les jurés figuraient notamment les chanteurs Karine Deshayes et Philippe Jaroussky. Alain Lanceron, patron de Warner Classics. Ou Frédérique Gerbelle, productrice des Grandes Voix. «Pour les autodidactes comme les chanteurs aguerris qui postulent, c’est une super audition. L’opportunité de se présenter devant des personnalités qui peuvent décider de leur carrière.»

Reunion Island crowned at the Voix des Outre-mer competition

Fabrice Di Falco can blow. Despite strikes and show cancellations, the 2020 final of the Voix des Outre-mer competition did take place as planned at the Opéra Bastille on 8 January. “I thank the management of the Opera for making this moment possible,” he says.

On Wednesday, this year’s fourteen finalists, aged between 14 and 36, from Martinique, Guyana, Reunion Island and Saint Pierre and Miquelon, were able to give an overview of their talents in front of the prestigious jury of this second edition. Among the jurors were singers Karine Deshayes and Philippe Jaroussky. Alain Lanceron, head of Warner Classics. Or Frédérique Gerbelle, producer of Les Grandes Voix. “For self-taught singers as well as seasoned singers who apply, it’s a great audition. The opportunity to appear in front of personalities who can make career decisions.”
