The “fire-breathing virtuoso” will be concluding his cycle of Brahms’ piano sonatas, with the first single, ‘Die Stadt’, by Franz Schubert out today
After becoming the first French pianist to win the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition and Grand Prix in 2019, Alexandre Kantorow went on to become the youngest recipient of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award in 2024. The “Liszt reincarnate” will be releasing the final instalment of his cycle dedicated to Brahms’ piano sonatas, the previous instalments of which received high praise from both audiences and critics from around the world.
The album opens with Brahms’ Sonata in C major which is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant débuts in musical history. The work is paired with Franz Schubert’s most virtuosic output, Wanderer Fantasy, one that fittingly anticipates the expressive possibilities of Franz Liszt, whose transcriptions of Schubert Lieder feature on this album.
This project showcases Kantorow’s virtuosic flare and further establishes him as one of the most distinguished pianists of his generation.
