André Rieu has donated €425,000 (£360,000) to provide music lessons for 1,000 children living in his hometown in the Netherlands.
The Dutch violinist and conductor donated the money to Jeugdfonds Cultuur Limburg, a culture and youth foundation in the province of Limburg.
With music increasingly disappearing from schools, Rieu says, children today are learning to make music far less than before.
“I would like to give these children the pleasure of making music,” said the maestro. “My orchestra members and I know how much fun it is to make music every day, and to make millions of people happy with music night after night.”

Tausendmal Beethoven – zum 250. Geburtstag des Komponisten feiert Deutschland den Meister aus Bonn im kommenden Jahr auf allen Kanälen. Rund 1000 Konzerte, Opernaufführungen, Ausstellungen und Konferenzen stehen 2020 bundesweit im Zeichen der Musik Ludwig van Beethovens (1770-1827), dem wohl berühmtesten Deutschen, wie Kulturstaatsministerin Monika Grütters (CDU) am Freitag bei der Vorstellung des Programms in Berlin sagte. Dabei spiele Beethovens Geburtsstadt Bonn, wo der Komponist vor seinem Umzug nach Wien bis zu seinem 22. Lebensjahr blieb, eine zentrale Rolle, sagte der nordrhein-westfälische Ministerpräsident Armin Laschet (CDU).
Beethoven gehöre nämlich «zur DNA Nordrhein-Westfalens», sagte der CDU-Politiker. Mit seiner «Ode an die Freude» aus der 9. Sinfonie, die heute die Europa-Hymne ist, sei er einer größten Europäer überhaupt. Zur Feier der Visionen und Gedanken dieses Anhängers der Französischen Revolution gebe es keinen besseren Ort als Bonn. Mehr als 300 Projekte sind in der Beethoven-Stadt, dem Rhein-Sieg-Kreis und Nordrhein-Westfalen geplant. Ob Karnevals-Umzüge, «Fidelio»-Chöre oder eine Schifffahrt im Zeichen des Komponisten – Beethoven wird im kommenden Jahr wohl allgegenwärtig sein. Eine Gehörlosen-Schule wird sich Beethoven, der viele seine wichtigsten Werke als Gehörloser komponierte, ebenso widmen wie das Musical «Ludwig2020».

With his “Ode to Joy” from the 9th Symphony, which today is the European anthem, he is one of the greatest Europeans of all. There is no better place to celebrate the visions and thoughts of this follower of the French Revolution than Bonn. More than 300 projects are planned in Beethoven City, the Rhein-Sieg District and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Et que nous créerons, demain, le comité stratégique de filière », a poursuivi le ministre de la Culture.
