Troubled arts venues get 14m rescue

More than 50 theatres, galleries and other arts organisations at “serious financial risk” have received emergency grants totalling £14m from Arts Council England over the past three years.

The Philharmonia Orchestra will accompany one production a year, initially for five years from 2017, in new productions of late 19th- and 20th-century opera.

Producer Unathi Mtirara, Mandela’s grandnephew, told the Agence France Presse (AFP) news agency the show had run out of money to pay performers.
