BACKAurora Orchestra presents Symphonie fantastique Orchestral Theatre concert
Aurora Orchestra is to explore Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique as part of its Orchestral Theatre series, intertwining live orchestral performance with design, lighting, choreography and spoken word by actor Mathew Baynton. Performing the whole symphony without sheet music, the orchestra will explore the composer’s imagination and world through theatrical elements including a specially-commissioned set design by Kate Wicks. The concert will trace the story from Berlioz’s inspiration for the work (his obsessive infatuation with the actress Harriet Smithson after seeing her perform in Shakespeare’s Hamlet) to the creation of the Symphonie fantastique, with Baynton reciting text taken from the composer’s own letters and memoirs.

Neue musikzeitung: Herr Hopp, wenn Sie auf diese 15 Jahre zurückblicken: Was ist Ihr bestimmendes Gefühl?
Winrich Hopp: Einen Rückblick habe ich mir bislang noch nicht leisten können. Schon jetzt geht es ja wieder um die Planungen und Vorbereitungen dessen, was beim Musikfest Berlin in zwei, drei und vier Jahren stattfinden „könnte“. Ein bestimmtes Gefühl? Wenn eines, dann das von Frühling. Das Musikfest Berlin liegt ja auf dem Übergang vom Sommer in den Herbst, und es eröffnet jeweils die neue Saison. Insofern nicht Herbst, sondern Frühling! Alles auf Neustart eben. Jede Saison.
nmz: Wie haben sich die Themen und Konzepte verändert in den letzten 15 Jahren? Besser: Wie haben Sie sie verändert?

Nmz: Mr Hopp, looking back on these 15 years: what is your determining feeling?
Winrich Hopp: I have not been able to afford a retrospective yet. We are already now all about the planning and preparations for what could take place at the Musikfest Berlin in two, three and four years. A certain feeling? If one, then it would be that of spring. The Musikfest Berlin is indeed on the transition from summer to fall, and its the opening of every new concert season. Insofar not autumn, but spring! Everything on a reboot. Every season.
nmz: How have the topics and concepts changed in the last 15 years? Better: how did you change it?
