Klimaschutz in der Klassikbranche –
Menschliches Dreckdach

Climate protection in the classical music industry – Human dirt roof

How can the classical music industry become more climate and environmentally friendly? There are many efforts, but sustainable solutions have not yet been found.

“Here the majestic sun does not hide a man-made dirt roof, the blue sky is my sublime roof,” enthused Beethoven in 1804 during a walk in Baden. The idyll could soon be over when the atmosphere increasingly becomes a gas-filled “CO2 dirty roof” and turns Mother Earth into a greenhouse.

So it literally stinks, and the music also contributes to this, whereby by no means Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto is meant, about which Eduard Hanslick wrote that one hears “music stinks”. What is meant is the music business. It is not unusual to travel around the world to Tokyo or Sydney for a single concert or opera performance. Large concert halls want to be filled day after day with 2,000 listeners. Munich, Berlin or Hamburg: up to forty top international orchestras visit every season. Their CO2 result is miserable.

Lang Lang and his wife reality TV stars

Lang Lang is not a “classical” musician and those who thought that his marriage in June 2019 to the German-Korean pianist Gina Alice Redlinger would appease the eccentric and talented Chinese pianist are paying for it. For the past month, the couple has been featured on a series of successful reality TV shows in China.

Scenes from marital life
Lang Lang’s extravagance, both on stage in front of his keyboard and in his private life, is well known, as evidenced by his (very) pompous wedding at the Château de Versailles last June. He is the “good client” to invite to radio studios and television studios where his talent as a showman is often equal to his great talent as a pianist.
