BACKBBC says words to Rule, Britannia! will now be sung at Proms
The BBC has caved in to pressure and announced that the words of Rule, Britannia! and Land of Hope and Glory will be sung at the Last Night of the Proms.
The decision comes three days into the tenure of the new director general, Tim Davie, who has this week been in the headlines for threatening to axe leftwing comedy shows.
Wasfi Kani, the founder of Grange Park Opera, is among those who find the second line of Rule, Britannia! – “Britons never, never, never shall be slaves”– problematic as it suggests other people can be slaves.
Told of the U-turn, she said: “I give up. If they don’t get it, they’ll never get it. Isn’t it depressing?”

Der Verein zur Förderung der klassischen Musik verleiht am 18. Oktober 2020 den Opus Klassik. Bereits jetzt stehen die Gewinner des Musikpreises fest. Dabei geht die Auszeichnung für die Sängerin des Jahres nach dem Votum der neunköpfigen Jury erstmals an gleich zwei Künstlerinnen, und zwar an Elina Garanca und Marlis Petersen, wie die Veranstalter am 2. September bei einer Onlinerunde bekannt gaben.
Eine weitere Premiere gibt es in der Sparte “Dirigent des Jahres”, wo mit Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla erstmals eine Frau die Trophäe für das beste Dirigat erhält. Zum “Sänger des Jahres” kürte die Jury Daniel Behle, die Auszeichnung in der Kategorie “Solistische Einspielung Gesang” geht an Diana Damrau und Igor Levit erhält den Opus Klassik für den von GfK Entertainment ermittelten “Bestseller des Jahres”, seine Einspielung der Beethoven-Klaviersonaten.
Zu den weiteren Preisträgern beim Opus Klassik 2020 gehören die Violinistin Anne-Sophie Mutter als “Instrumentalistin des Jahres” und der Tenor Jonas Kaufmann mit seinem Album “Wien” als einer der Sieger in der Sparte “Klassik ohne Grenzen”. Weitere Awards gehen an Blockflötistin Dorothee Oberlinger (“Instrumentalistin des Jahres”), Detlev Glanert (“Komponist des Jahres”), Jakub Józef Orlinski (“Operneinspielung”), das vision string quartet (“Kammermusikeinspielung Quartett”) oder das Ensemble Resonanz (“Ensemble/Orchester des Jahres”). Zum Beethoven-Jubiläiumsjahr geht der Sonderpreis “Beethoven 250” an das Beethoven Orchester Bonn für die Schauspielmusik “Egmont”.
Winners for the third Opus Klassik have been announced
On 18 October 2020, the Verein zur Förderung der klassischen Musik will award the Opus Klassik prize. The winners of the music prize have already been named. For the first time, the award for the singer of the year will go to two artists at once, namely Elina Garanca and Marlis Petersen, as the organizers announced during an online round on September 2.
Another premiere is in the “Conductor of the Year” section, where Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla is the first woman to receive the trophy for best conductor.
