Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason: ‘Growing up, I didn’t know of many Black classical musicians’

For so many young, Black, creative people sitting at home that day, seeing Sheku Kanneh-Mason bowing his cello for a televised audience of two billion people at the Duke of Duchess of Sussex’s Royal Wedding was a moment – a moment in which they saw a musician at the top of his game, who looked like themselves and their families.

“It’s very, very difficult to see yourself doing something if no-one who looks like you is doing it,” Sheku tells broadcaster Zeze Millz in an interview for Black Lives in Music, a new organisation supporting Black musicians and music creators in the UK.

Wiener Philharmoniker aufgrund vorgezogener Impfung in der Kritik

Die Wiener Philharmoniker sind im Rahmen der Corona-Schutzimpfungen für ihre Musiker in die Kritik geraten. In der vergangenen Woche war bekannt geworden, dass 95 Orchestermusiker ihre erste Corona-Impfung bereits erhalten haben. 

Grund für die vorgezogene Impfung außerhalb der Reihenfolge für die übrigen Bürger Österreichs sei laut der Leitung des Klangkörpers, dass das Orchester spielfähig bleiben und seinen Verpflichtungen nachkommen müsse. Könnten die Auftritte, teilweise auch im Ausland, nicht eingehalten werden, drohten hohe Vertragsstrafen. Allerdings, so betonte das insgesamt 148 Personen starke Orchester, wurden nur diejenigen Musiker geimpft, die für die betreffenden Konzerte eingeplant sind.

Vienna Philharmonic criticised for early vaccination

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has come under criticism regarding the Corona vaccination for its musicians. Last week, news came out that 95 orchestra musicians had already received their first Corona vaccination. 

According to the management of the orchestra, the reason for the early vaccination was that the orchestra had to remain fit to play and fulfil its obligations. In case of missing the performances, some of them being abroad, heavy contractual penalties would follow. The orchestra, which has a total of 148 members, emphasised that only the musicians scheduled for the concerts in question have been vaccinated.

Gustavo Dudamel, nouveau directeur musical de l’Opéra de Paris

C’est un nouvel acte qui va s’écrire pour l’Opéra de Paris. Alexander Neef vient de nommer le chef d’orchestre vénézuélien, Gustavo Dudamel, comme directeur musical de l’institution. Il prendra ses fonctions dès la saison prochaine, jonglant entre Los Angeles et Paris.

Gustavo Dudamel prend la suite de Philippe Jordan en tant que directeur musical de l’Opéra national de Paris. Le directeur de la maison lyrique parisienne, Alexander Neef, l’a annoncé vendredi 16 avril lors d’une conférence de presse, aux côtés du chef vénézuélien. Son contrat débutera dès le 1er août prochain, pour un mandat d’une durée de 6 ans. Dès la saison prochaine, Gustavo Dudamel dirigera deux productions : Turandot de Puccini et Les Noces de Figaro de Mozart.

Gustavo Dudamel to be new Music Director of Paris Opera

A new act is about to be written for the Paris Opera. Alexander Neef has appointed the Venezuelan conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, as the institution’s new musical director. He will take up his post next season, travelling between Los Angeles and Paris.

Gustavo Dudamel is taking over from Philippe Jordan as Music Director of the Opéra national de Paris. The director of the Parisian opera house, Alexander Neef, announced the news on Friday 16 April at a press conference, alongside the Venezuelan conductor. His contract will begin on 1 August for a six-year period. Starting next season, Gustavo Dudamel will conduct two productions: Puccini’s Turandot and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.
