Classical music’s bright young stars who are shaping the future of the music we love

In the centuries-old world of classical music, every generation faces challenges but also makes its mark. Meet the young instrumentalists and composers who are doing their bit to revolutionise their musical worlds and change the future of the classical genre.

Manchester-born guitarist Alexandra Whittingham is a rising star of the British classical music scene. Alexandra studied guitar and piano at the renowned Chetham’s School of Music before, with scholarship in hand, heading to Royal Academy of Music in London. In the spring of 2013, Alexandra won the inaugural Edinburgh Guitar Competition and has collected many awards in guitar competitions around Europe.

Europäischer Filmpreis 2020 für Komponistin Dascha Dauenhauer

Komponistin Dascha Dauenhauer hat den Europäischen Filmpreis in der Kategorie Beste Musik gewonnen. Die Musikerin erhielt den Preis für ihre Musik in der Neuverfilmung von Alfred Döblins “Berlin Alexanderplatz”. Die verleihende Europäische Filmakademie Berlin und Präsident Wim Wenders bezeichneten die Musik als ungewöhnlich und provokativ.

Der Jury gefiel das breite Spektrum, das Dauenhauer für den Film nutzte: Orchester-Arrangements neben Elektro- und Popmusik. Nachdem die ursprüngliche Preisverleihung in Island pandemiebedingt abgesagt wurde, findet die Gala nun digital an mehreren Abenden statt.

European Film Prize 2020 for composer Dascha Dauenhauer

Composer Dascha Dauenhauer has won the European Film Prize in the category Best Music. The musician received the prize for her music in the new film adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s “Berlin Alexanderplatz”. The awarding European Film Academy Berlin and President Wim Wenders described the music as unusual and provocative.

The jury liked the broad spectrum that Dauenhauer used for the film: orchestral arrangements alongside electro and pop music. After the original award ceremony in Iceland was cancelled due to a pandemic, the gala will now take place digitally on several evenings.

Stephanie Childress : encore une cheffe française nommée aux Etats-Unis

Française, ou plutôt franco-britannique. Elle vient d’être désignée Cheffe assistante au St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, au côté de Stéphane Denève, actuel directeur musical de la formation.  

Au lendemain de la nomination de Nathalie Stutzmann à l’Orchestre de Philadelphie, et alors que Stéphane Denève ou Louis Langrée poursuivent eux aussi de belles carrières outre-Atlantique, la nomination de Stephanie Childress confirme que nos talents de la direction s’exportent bien… alors que l’on compte sur les doigts d’une main les chefs français à la tête de nos orchestres permanents. « De toute ma vie, je n’ai jamais été aussi excité par la découverte d’un nouveau talent ! » s’est exclamé Stéphane Denève à propos de Stephanie Childress, à qui il promet « un avenir extrêmement brillant.

Stephanie Childress: another French chef appointed in the United States

French, or rather Franco-British. She has just been appointed Assistant Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, alongside Stéphane Denève, the current musical director of the group. 

The day after the appointment of Nathalie Stutzmann to the Philadelphia Orchestra, and while Stéphane Denève and Louis Langrée are also pursuing fine careers across the Atlantic, the appointment of Stephanie Childress confirms that our conducting talents are being exported… while we can count on the fingers of one hand the French conductors at the head of our permanent orchestras. “I have never been so excited to discover a new talent in my life! “exclaimed Stéphane Denève about Stephanie Childress, to whom he promises “an extremely bright future.
