Johns’ Boys Welsh Male Voice Choir

Choir

Johns’ Boys Welsh Male Voice Choir was founded in 2016 by conductor Aled Phillips, drawing together singers from across Wrexham County and the surrounding area. The choir takes its name from the local village of Rhosllannerchrugog and the historic tradition of male voice choirs deeply embedded in the community. From its earliest days, the ensemble placed a strong emphasis on musical precision, expressive storytelling, and the preservation of Welsh choral heritage through innovative performance.

Within only a few years, Johns’ Boys began to achieve national recognition. Their success at regional festivals led to increasing demand for performances across Wales and the wider UK. In 2019, the choir made history by becoming the first British male voice choir to win the Luciano Pavarotti Choir of the World Prize at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. This marked a turning point in their artistic journey and contributed to their rapid rise to international prominence.

Today, Johns’ Boys are recognised as one of the leading male voice choirs in the UK, known for their distinctive sound, expressive range, and commitment to expanding the choral repertoire. Their work honours the Welsh musical tradition while engaging new audiences through collaborations, recordings, and appearances on major broadcast platforms. The choir continues to build on its strong community roots, shaping a modern identity for male voice singing and inspiring the next generation of Welsh choral performers.
