Tryfon Koutsourelis

Composer

Tryfon Koutsourelis is a Greek composer, musician, and producer whose evocative work bridges classical, contemporary, and experimental genres. Based in London with strong ties to Athens and Paris, his artistry spans award-winning films and documentaries, dance performances, and site-specific installations that push the boundaries of sound and space.

From an early age, Tryfon’s innate musical talent shone through. At just six years old, he began playing classical pieces by ear on a friend’s piano. Although initially self-taught, he later refined his skills in both classical and modern piano, developing a deep understanding of music theory. A pivotal moment in his musical education came under the mentorship of George Hadjinikos—a disciple of Carl Orff and a prominent figure at the Royal Manchester College of Music—whose guidance instilled in him a distinctive musical finesse and an avant-garde perspective that continues to define his work.

Tryfon’s career is marked by remarkable collaborations and groundbreaking projects. Notably, he served as an assistant to legendary composer Vangelis Papathanasiou from 2007 to 2009, contributing to iconic projects such as the “Blade Runner Trilogy: 25th Anniversary” and the “El Greco Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.” Early in his journey, Tryfon embarked on the Spyropoulos project, composing the evocative piece “Light in the Dark.” Inspired by Spyropoulos’ paintings, this work = captures the delicate interplay of illumination and shadow, transforming visual contrasts into a rich auditory experience that invites listeners to explore the profound duality present in art and life.

In collaboration with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra—renowned for having hosted luminaries like Jerry Goldsmith, Michel Legrand, Alan Menken, and Ennio Morricone—Tryfon recorded and released numerous works of contemporary classical music through EMI UK. These recordings have enjoyed significant success and have been licensed for a variety of films and documentaries, further solidifying his reputation as an innovative force in modern composition.

Building on this innovative spirit, Tryfon further pushed creative boundaries with the mesmerizing score he composed for the underwater ballet “Drops of Breath.” As the first underwater dance and visual performance funded by the Creative Europe Programme, this project captivated audiences in the historic setting of Sounio, Greece, and showcased his ability to weave enchantment through sound.

In 2016, Tryfon collaborated with choreographer Apostolia Papadamaki on “The Theta Series – All-Night Event at the Onassis Stegi,” as part of the Hypnos Project. This immersive, overnight performance combined Papadamaki’s choreography with Tryfon’s evocative compositions to guide participants through the various stages of sleep, creating a profound connection with the subconscious mind. Uniquely, the event featured a sleepover component, inviting audience participants to remain overnight and fully engage with the transformative experience of sleep and dreams. Enhancing the sensory journey, the music was performed live using advanced electronics and a modular system, seamlessly fusing acoustic expression with digital experimentation.

His creative journey also breathes new life into Greece’s ancient heritage. Through his site-specific performance series “Anamnesis,” Tryfon has transformed archaeological sites like Delos and Delphi into living, resonant spaces. Recent projects include composing for a dance performance featured at the Paris Cultural Olympiad in 2024 and creating music for “Prometeo o del sogno infranto di Europa,” an exhibition and site performance at Museo Castromediano in Lecce, Italy, in collaboration with Accademia Mediterranea dell’Attore, which showcased the works of renowned artist Kostas Varotsos.

Currently, Tryfon is preparing to release a series of albums that will include selections from his diverse body of work alongside new compositions—starting with the release of “C’est Beau.” Originally created as part of a choreography project by the French dance company DK-BEL and featured within the Paris 2024 Olympic Games’ cultural program. The compositions have been carefully adapted for listening, offering a cohesive and immersive auditory journey that reflects Tryfon’s innovative approach to contemporary classical music. These releases promise to showcase his talent for creating immersive sonic landscapes that
resonate deeply —a journey he plans to enhance with compelling live performances.
