Claudio Cavina, countertenor and ensemble leader, has died

He was best known for founding and directing the ensemble La Venexiana, which specialised in Italian madrigals and Monteverdi’s music.

Born in 1962, trained in Bologna by Candace Smith and then at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis by Kurt Widmer and René Jacobs, countertenor Claudio Cavina made his debut as a soloist in various Baroque works – including a role in L’Orfeo at the Arena in Verona in 1990. He sings in Rinaldo Alessandrini’s Concerto Italiano. He soon devoted much of his energy to his ensemble, La Venexiana, founded in 1995 with soprano Rossana Bertini. He sings in it and is its artistic director. Initially a duo with basso continuo, La Venexiana soon expanded to include what would become the heart of his repertoire: the Italian madrigal, which he recorded mainly for the Glossa label.

A remarkable collection of Monteverdi’s nine books, as well as records devoted to Barbara Strozzi, Carlo Gesualdo (including a Diapason d’or), Giaches de Wert (Diapason d’or), Luca Marenzio and Sigismondo d’India, many of which are references in the field. Under the direction of Claudio Cavina, La Venexiana has also engraved Monteverdi’s three operas – mainly an Orfeo still firmly rooted in the madrigalesque context of his writing – as well as the Selva morale e spirituale.
