14th June: Classical musicians named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, Composer Tania León wins Music Pulitzer, Serge Dorny to present his first season at Bayerische Staatsoper Munich

Classical musicians named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list

The Queen’s Birthday Honours, announced yesterday evening, include a handful of classical musicians. The pianist Imogen Cooper has been made a Dame, and Julian Lloyd Webber, the cellist and former Principal of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, has been awarded an OBE. An OBE also went to the Jamaican-born composer Eleanor Alberga.

The composer and pianist Huw Watkins received an MBE as did the opera singer Jeremy Huw Williams. The saxophonist Jess Gillam has received an MBE, as has the horn-player and member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Sarah Willis.

Komponistin Tania León gewinnt Pulitzer Prize for Music

Die kubanische Komponistin Tania León ist die diesjährige Preisträgerin des Pulitzer Prize for Music. Die Musikerin wurde für ihr Werk “Stride” ausgezeichnet, das Anfang 2020 vom New York Philharmonic Orchestra unter der Leitung von Jaap van Zweden uraufgeführt worden war. Die Jury hob in ihrer Begründung die musikalische Verschmelzung von westlichen Orchesterklängen mit karibischen Tönen und Schwarzer Musik aus den USA hervor.

Das Werk war vom New York Philharmonic Orchestra als Teil des “Project 19” in Auftrag gegeben worden, welches das hundertjährige Jubiläum des 19th Amendment der US-amerikanischen Verfassung ehren sollte, das Frauenwahlrecht. Die Auszeichnung ist mit 15.000 US-Dollar (rund 12.400 Euro) dotiert.

Composer Tania León wins Music Pulitzer

Cuban composer Tania León is this year’s winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music. The musician was honoured for her work “Stride”, which premiered in early 2020 by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jaap van Zweden. In its statement, the jury highlighted the musical fusion of Western orchestral sounds with Caribbean tones and Black music from the USA.

The work was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as part of “Project 19”, which was intended to honour the centenary of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, the women’s right to vote. The award is endowed with 15,000 US dollars (about 12,400 euros).

Bayerische Staatsoper de Munich : Serge Dorny présente sa première saison et veut « célébrer les différences »

La saison 2021/2022  présentée par le Bayerische Staatsoper marquera les débuts de Serge Dorny à la direction générale de l’opéra munichois et de Vladimir Jurowski, son nouveau directeur musical. Au programme de la prochaine saison, pas moins de 11 nouvelles productions, 2 nouveaux festivals et de nombreuses premières.

« Regarder l’autre, le particulier hors norme, et considérer la diversité comme une force de notre société. C’est un bien spécial, le bien suprême. Une société doit célébrer ses différences, sans quoi pas de société. Tout le monde est roi ou reine ». Tel est le principe directeur sur lequel Serge Dorny a souhaité baser le programme de la saison 2021-2022 du Bayerische Staatsoper, considéré comme le premier théâtre lyrique d’Allemagne.

Bayerische Staatsoper Munich: Serge Dorny to present his first season celebrating diversity

The 2021/2022 season presented by the Bayerische Staatsoper will mark the debut of Serge Dorny as General Director of the Munich opera house and of Vladimir Jurowski, its new Music Director. The programme for the coming season includes as many as 11 new productions, two new festivals and numerous premieres.

“To look at others, the individual outside the norm, and to consider diversity as a strength of our society. This is a special good, the ultimate good. A society must celebrate its differences, without which there is no society. Everyone is king or queen.” This is the key principle on which Serge Dorny wanted to base the programme for the 2021-2022 season of the Bayerische Staatsoper, which is considered Germany’s leading opera house.
