Subdued Proms concludes after Rule, Britannia! row

A subdued version of The Last Night of the Proms has been held in London, after a row over Rule, Britannia! threatened to overshadow the event. It saw a pared-down version of the BBC Symphony Orchestra play to an empty Royal Albert Hall, in order to comply with coronavirus restrictions.

After a very public row, the patriotic songs Rule, Britannia! and Land Of Hope And Glory were sung by a small choir. The BBC was criticised for plans to omit the lyrics last month.

Critics said the words evoked a British colonial, imperialist past that is at odds with the values of modern Britain and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin: Season opening

Robin Ticciati and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin open the new concert season in good tradition at the Musikfest Berlin. After having devoted itself indirectly to Ludwig van Beethoven on several occasions in the previous season on the occasion of his 250th birthday, the orchestra will now interpret a composition by the jubilarian himself with the Fourth Symphony.

It is also the first time that Principal Conductor Robin Ticciati has performed a Beethoven symphony with the DSO. In doing so, they are continuing an interpretive approach that they began in 2018 and 2019 with great success: the use of gut strings on the strings and the use of natural trumpets and horns for the winds.

Culture Minister releases millions for the ONP and the Opéra Comique

This morning in Le Figaro, Culture Minister Roselyne Bachelot announced that she had allocated 81 million euros to the Paris National Opera, including 20 million for the completion of work on the modular auditorium (which was, before the summer break and according to our observations, a gigantic concrete box, strictly brutalist, far from completion and with no real operating budget).

This envelope will be released “if the project is confirmed”. The Opéra Comique should also receive an envelope of 2.5 million euros to redress its suffering cash flow.
