BACKSoprano Siân Dicker wins ROSL Competition Singers Section prize
British Soprano Siân Dicker has won the Singers section prize in the 68th ROSL Annual Music Competition.
With an all-year female line-up for the first time in many years, the Singers round saw Dicker compete against sopranos Alexandra Flood, Isabelle Peters and Milly Forrest, and mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean, for the £5,000 prize.
Adjudicators James Clutton, Gavin Henderson CBE, Patricia Macmahon, Geoff Parkin, Ann Rawdon Smith and Nicki Wenham chose Dicker to progress as the section winner on to the Gold Medal Final, where she will compete for the £15,000 first prize. In addition, Betts-Dean was awarded the £1,000 Audrey Strange Memorial Prize for a Singer of Promise.
Christoph Eschenbach wird 80 Jahre alt
Christoph Eschenbach feiert am 20. Februar 2020 seinen 80. Geburtstag. In Breslau geboren, wuchs er als Kriegswaise bei der Pianistin Wallydore Eschenbach, der Cousine seiner Mutter, in Schleswig-Holstein und Aachen auf und erhielt von ihr ersten Klavierunterricht – der erste Schritt auf dem Weg ins Leben als Pianist und Dirigent. Nach dem Studium bei Eliza Hansen (Klavier) und Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg (Dirigieren) ebneten ihm erste Preise als Pianist beim ARD-Wettbewerb 1962 und dem Concours Clara Haskil 1965 auch international den Weg. Berühmt für die Breite seines Repertoires, wurden zahlreiche seiner Einspielungen mit prestigeträchtigen Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter der Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, der MIDEM Classical Award und der Grammy Award. Christoph Eschenbach selbst ist Ritter der Légion d’honneur, Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, Träger des Bundesverdienstkreuzes und Gewinner des Leonard Bernstein Preises. 2015 wurde er als Pianist und Dirigent mit dem Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis ausgezeichnet.

Christoph Eschenbach turns 80 years old
Christoph Eschenbach celebrates his 80th birthday on the 20th February 2020. Born in Wroclaw, he grew up as a war orphan with the pianist Wallydore Eschenbach, his mother’s cousin, in Schleswig-Holstein and Aachen and received his first piano lessons from her – the first step on his way to life as a pianist and conductor. After studying with Eliza Hansen (piano) and Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg (conducting), first prizes as a pianist at the ARD Competition in 1962 and the Concours Clara Haskil in 1965 paved his way internationally. Famous for the width of his repertoire, many of his recordings have been awarded prestigious prizes, including the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the MIDEM Classical Award and the Grammy Award. Christoph Eschenbach himself is a Knight of the Légion d’honneur, Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, holder of the Federal Cross of Merit and winner of the Leonard Bernstein Prize. In 2015 he was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize as pianist and conductor.

Ben Glassberg, 26 ans, nommé à la direction musicale de l’Opéra de Rouen-Normandie
Ben Glassberg, jeune chef d’orchestre britannique de 26 ans a été nommé au poste de Directeur musical de l’Opéra de Rouen-Normandie à partir de la saison 2020-2021, pour un premier mandat de 3 ans. C’est ce qu’a annoncé ce mercredi la direction de l’Opéra. Selon le communiqué de l’institution rouennaise, qui n’avait plus de titulaire à ce poste depuis le départ de Leo Hussain en 2016 : « Figure marquante de la nouvelle génération de chefs d’orchestre, l’arrivée de Ben Glassberg constitue une nouvelle étape dans le développement de cette maison depuis l’obtention du statut de Théâtre Lyrique d’intérêt National en 2017. A la tête de l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen Normandie, il sera associé à toutes ses initiatives, allant de la programmation à l’action culturelle, des tournées aux projets d’enregistrements discographiques ».

Ben Glassberg, a young 26-year-old British conductor, has been appointed Music Director of the Rouen-Normandy Opera from the 2020-2021 season, for a first 3-year term. This was announced on Wednesday by the management of the Opera. According to the press release of the Rouen institution, which had no longer an incumbent in this position since the departure of Leo Hussain in 2016: “A key figure of the new generation of conductors, the arrival of Ben Glassberg is a new step in the development of this house since obtaining the status of Lyric Theatre of National Interest in 2017. At the head of the Rouen Normandy Opera Orchestra, he will be involved in all its initiatives, from programming to cultural action, from tours to recording projects”.
