Plácido Domingo says harassment apology gave ‘false impression’

Spanish opera singer says his words had been misunderstood after apology triggers backlash. Plácido Domingo has rowed back on an apology he made over sexual harassment allegations just two days earlier, after his mea culpa triggered a backlash and cancellations in Spain. The Spanish opera singer, who faces multiple allegations of sexual harassment, apologised on Tuesday for “the hurt” caused to his accusers, saying he accepted “full responsibility” for his actions. But on Thursday, the 79-year-old insisted his words had been misunderstood.“I feel I have to issue another statement to correct the false impression generated by my apology,” said the tenor-turned-baritone, whose earlier statement had said he was “truly sorry” without specifically confirming any of the allegations.

Marin Alsop, Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for the past 14 years, will leave her position at the end of the 2020-2021 season.

When she was appointed in 2007 to lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO), Marin Alsop became the first woman to be appointed Music Director of one of the 17 “major” orchestras in the United States. Although the reasons for her departure next year have not been specified, one can imagine that the financial difficulties encountered in recent years ($16 million in accumulated losses over 10 years), which led the orchestra to cancel its concerts scheduled for the summer of 2019 and to shorten its season to 40 weeks, had a lot to do with it. While in London, the conductor commented on this decision in a press release.

“The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s great orchestras and I am proud to have been its Artistic Director. I look forward to leading these exceptional musicians as Music Director in the coming season and to continuing our involvement in my new position as Music Director Laureate,” she said, noting that she will continue to work with the BSO on three weeks of concerts each year until 2026, and that she will remain involved with the OrchKids educational program (introducing Baltimore children to classical music and instruments) that she founded in 2008.
