Evgeny Grinko: A Melancholy Rebel

Wednesday 29th May 2024

Evgeny Grinko is already a digital phenomenon as well as  an international star – he is now making his German debut, sharing previously unpublished gems with his new EP, “Outtakes II”, which will be released on 21 June 2024

Unadulterated, pure, minimalistic – Since his rise to fame in 2010, the distinctive sound of Evgeny Grinko’s music has captivated audiences all across the globe, with 400 million streams on Spotify, over 2 Million monthly listeners and about 200 million clicks on Youtube. While currently working on his new album, set to be released in 2025, Grinko decided to share some previously unpublished gems with his EP “Outtakes II” on 21 June 2024.

Born and raised in Russia, Grinko’s initial encounters with music came through Russian TV, where he was quickly mesmerised by Russian Rockabilly, Surf music, and film soundtracks like The Three Musketeers. After learning to play the guitar and the drums, he played in different Indie-Noise bands before diving into classical music.

Only at the age of 25 did he start teaching himself to play the piano. In classical music, success is often associated with learning an instrument at a young age. Grinko contradicts these prejudices by approaching the audience with an unrivalled sensitivity for the piano and unbridled passion for music. Grinko’s story of success is one that encourages learning new things without knowing where it might lead you.

Grinko’s development as a self-taught pianist becomes apparent in his albums “„Ice For Aureliano Buendia“ and „Orange Marmalade“. The receptiveness that is required to learn an instrument autodidactically is key to forming his distinctive cinematic sound and enables his music to reach us at our very core. Grinko draws inspiration from his surroundings and manages to capture the feeling of even the most inconspicuous moments in his music. Every album and every EP paints a picture of the composer’s view of the world so cinematic that it overpowers the audience in its beauty and detail.

“Every new composition feels like a small miracle to me and when you create a miracle, you are keen to share it with the rest of the world!” (Evgeny Grinko)

Grinko’s track “Valse” bears witness to his capability of inscribing profound emotionality into simplistic compositions. Published in 2010, it brought him international recognition, particularly in Turkey, where the music video achieved over a million views in 2012 and 2013.

The second track of the upcoming EP, “Uzun Ince”, is dedicated to his Turkish fans and their support over the years. This Turkish folk song, released as a single on 17 May, holds a special place in Grinko’s heart as well as on the EP. The main idea of “Outtakes II” was to reveal what was not included in previous albums and combine it with some extra songs for a refined musical compilation.

“At a meaningful juncture in my life, I was reflecting on my career to date and as I listened to the recordings of my albums, I found these gems that I wanted to share with my fans.” (Evgeny Grinko)

His musical roots as a drummer become apparent in the track “1st”, where Grinko himself plays the drums and fascinates the audience with his musical versatility. Each track on this EP tells a story and through his compositions, Grinko again manages to reveal a piece of himself.

On 27 June, there will be an opportunity to experience one of Evgeny Grinko’s emotional live performances, which he has become known for, at the Passionskirche in Berlin.
