Aldeburgh Music have just release a promotional video of ‘Star-Shaped Biscuit,’ an opera by David Toop that is part of the groundbreaking Faster Than Sound Series. ‘Star Shaped Biscuit’ will be premiered on Saturday 15th September in one of Snape Malting’s derelict buildings.
The opera takes its name from a star-shaped biscuit which eccentric French dandy and author Raymond Roussel placed in a silver casket as a memento of his lunch with the astronomer and spiritist Flammarion in 1923. Through his research, Toop discovered that the lover and muse of Picasso, Dora Maar purchased Roussel’s star shaped biscuit at a Paris flea market.
Composed for electronics and a select group of vocal improvisers and multi- instrumentalists, the cast for this exciting performance includes singers Elaine Mitchener, Jamie McDermott and Lore Lixenberg, with Simon Allen, Martin Allen, Hélène Breschand, Sylvia Hallett and Jan Hendrickse.
