Anna-Maria Helsing takes post at BBC Concert Orchestra

The BBC Concert Orchestra has named Finnish conductor Anna-Maria Helsing as its new Principal Guest Conductor.

In taking a post with the orchestra – admired for its versatility (and indeed virtuosity) across a wide breath of repertoire – the Finnish conductor will join the conducting team of Principal Conductor Bramwell Tovey, Conductor Laureate Barry Wordsworth and Chief Guest Conductor Keith Lockhart. According to the orchestra, Helsing will be involved in further building its relationship with contemporary composers, including the current Composer-in-Residence, Dobrinka Tabakova, as well developing family concerts at the Southbank.

Helsing’s past posts include Chief Conductor of the Oulu Symphony (2010-2013) – the first time a woman had been head of a Finnish symphony orchestra.

With the premiere of Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony, Pierre Henry’s dream becomes a reality

Created in 1979 on magnetic tape from audio excerpts from Beethoven’s 9 symphonies, Pierre Henry’s Tenth Symphony had never been played by an orchestra before, as the pioneer of concrete music had dreamed of. This will be done on Saturday, November 23rd at the Philharmonie de Paris. It was conductor Pascal Rophé who was called upon by the institution to take up the challenge. The current Music Director of the Orchestre des Pays de la Loire, in collaboration with Isabelle Warnier, widow and collaborator of Pierre Henry, and the publishing house Ona, has embarked on the colossal task of making it possible, instrumentally speaking, to perform the Tenth Symphony. “It’s a kind of remix of Beethoven’s nine symphonies. And more than that, it is also the creation of a new object. Like what Picasso was able to do in his time, by gluing pieces of wallpaper together, to build something new,” explains Pascal Rophé.
