German theatres write to Merkel – concern about the survival of culture

In a letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), 23 artistic directors of German theatres have called for proportionate federal funding so that local authorities will not cut back on culture in the future, despite the Corona crisis. Many theatres and artists “have water up to their necks, both in the short term and, above all, in the broader perspective,” it said in the letter published on Thursday. Among others, Joachim Klement from the Dresden State Theater, Enrico Lübbe (Leipzig Theater) and Hasko Weber (German National Theater Weimar) signed the letter.

They are very concerned about the continued existence of cultural life, wrote the director of the Hamburg Thalia Theater, Joachim Lux, on behalf of 22 other large houses. In order to secure the future of small and large theatres, artists and international cooperation, the federal government now has a duty.

In the letter about the preservation of cultural institutions, the artistic directors encourage “to design federal aid for the municipalities according to the already existing and proven model of complementary financing.” The federal government would have to participate to a certain percentage and municipalities and states would commit themselves to a remaining amount that would not overwhelm them. “At least the municipalities or states would have to refrain from economizing on culture, including indirect measures.” This could, for example, be a non-compensation of salary increases. A package of this kind or a similar must be set up quickly, “because the next households and double households are just around the corner.”
