Soprano Kathryn Lewek, regarded as one of the most remarkable coloraturas today, will be reprising her iconic role of Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute: Concert Performance at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival on Saturday, 12 August 2023.

Joined by the prestigious Scottish Chamber Orchestra, she will once again demonstrate why she currently reigns as the most prolific Queen of the Night alive

This year, in the production of Die Zauberflöte in the fiendishly difficult Königin der Nacht (Queen of the Night) role,  she brought her official count at playing the role at The Met to 50, more than any other individual singer has performed a single role at the storied opera house, and over 300 in total.

Kathryn’s performances have become a beloved fixture in the opera world, with her performances consistently wowing audiences worldwide, including the UK press, hailing her as “perhaps the great Queen of the Night in contemporary opera” by the Financial Times, with a five star rating of the production as a whole.

Known for her stunning vocal range, technical precision, and vivacious energy on stage, she has always wowed UK audiences, with the Guardian stating that “Kathryn Lewek’s Queen of Night delivers both her arias to an impeccable standard.”

Her most recent performance at the Royal Opera House, this past September, continued to consolidate her unmatched skill in embodying the role of the Queen of the Night, “Kathryn Lewek brought the right sort of vocal megawattage to the Queen of the Night”The Spectator.

Kathryn’s interpretation of her signature role, the quintessential Mozart villain, has labelled her the current reigning Queen of the Night of the world, with productions of Die Zauberflöte at The Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, The Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bregenzer Festspiele, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera,, Wiener Straatsoper, Teatro Real in Madrid, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Festival Castell de Peralada, Opera Leipzig, The Royal Danish Opera, amongst others.

In addition to her success as Queen of the Night, Lewek is also lauded for her deeply affecting interpretations of other, equally virtuosic opera roles, such as the tile role in Lucia di Lammermoor, Violetta in La Traviata, Adèle in Le comte Ory, the Heroines in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and others. Future engagements include her role débuts of Juliette in Romeo et Juliette and Gilda in Rigoletto.
