Cristobal entered the Madrid Conservatory in 1947, after having been exiled during the Spanish Civil War. His teachers were Conrado del Campo and Alexander Tansman, but Cristobal was rather self-taught and took an interest in the most progressive currents of European music, in particular the Second Vienna School.
