On October 4th, the Ukrainian Vivere String Quartet will release their profoundly moving album Prayer for Ukraine with Phenotypic Recordings.
This heartfelt musical tribute, featuring original compositions by Ukrainian composers, captures the nation’s suffering and resilience, from its historical struggles to its current fight for survival.
“As a Ukrainian string quartet, Vivere often lets our music speak for our emotions, but our story is part of our nation’s struggle. Growing up under Soviet rule, we endured an oppressive education that suppressed individuality. Despite brutal training, our love for music persisted, and Ukraine’s independence allowed us to rediscover our voices.”
Comprising of Anna Bura, Dmytro Lysko, Ustym Zhuk, and Dmytro Nikolayev, the quartet has been separated due to the ongoing war. But even through displacement, bombings, and separation from family, the members remain united through music, channeling their love for Ukraine into this album.
“When Russia invaded in 2022, we stopped playing, paralyzed by fear and guilt. But a call from the National Opera reminded us that music could heal—not just for us, but for our audiences. Returning to the stage, we found that music gave us joy, hope, and resilience.”
The album features key compositions, such as “To Mary” and “Expressions” by the late composer Hannah Havrylets, and “Maria’s City (Mariupol)”—a powerful piece written by Zoltan Almashi from a bunker in Kyiv. The album also highlights the work of Vasily Barvinsky, a composer who was deported to Soviet labor camps in 1948, underscoring the historical roots of Ukrainian perseverance.
“Our album Prayer for Ukraine expresses both the grief and strength of our people. Despite recording in the midst of war, we stayed focused, pouring our emotions into each piece. Music, for us, is more than an art form—it is resistance, a testament to Ukraine’s spirit.”
All proceeds from the album will be donated to Revived Soldiers Ukraine, an organization that provides medical aid to wounded Ukrainian soldiers. Through their music, Vivere offers not only a glimpse into Ukraine’s soul but also a call to action for the global community.
“Freedom is not granted; it is earned through the tireless efforts of those who dare to dream of a better tomorrow—or at least a ‘tomorrow.’ The pursuit of liberty demands our collective strength and solidarity. Freedom is a priceless endeavor, often achieved through unimaginable sacrifices and resilience. Now, more than ever, Ukraine needs your unwavering support! Together, let us amplify our voices and prayers, advocate for justice, and work towards a world where the flame of freedom burns bright for all.”
The Prayer for Ukraine album stands as a musical prayer for freedom, a beacon of hope for peace, and a powerful reminder of Ukraine’s unbreakable spirit.
