Music education hubs receive another year’s funding

The Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed that England’s music education hubs will receive funding for the 2020-21 financial year, putting an end to speculation that the government may not renew the annual funding that hubs have received since their formation in September 2012. In addition, the DfE has allocated an additional £265,000 to supplement the current financial year’s funding.

The announcement means that for the current year, the previously agreed hub funding settlement of £75,840,000 will rise to £76,105,000 once the £265,000 has been added. For 2020-21, a funding settlement of £76,960,000 will be allocated – but this will be supplemented by approximately £2m (a figure that will be clarified at a later date) to cover increased employers’ pension contributions. This puts hub funding for 2020-21 at somewhere approaching £79m. As usual, the amount received by each hub will be calculated by Arts Council England based on pupil numbers.

Staatsoper Stuttgart: Costs for refurbishment exceed billion mark

New cost estimates for the renovation of the Stuttgart State Opera were published yesterday. According to the estimates, all work, including the costs for the interim venue, which has not yet been decided, could amount to over one billion euros. In addition to the renovation work, a modern cross stage and additional rehearsal rooms are to be installed in the house from 1911. In total, the directorate has announced a need for 10,450 square metres of additional floor space. The members of the government are still holding back on their decision, as the city and the state would have to share the costs completely. However, it is certain that construction will not begin before 2025, according to Lord Mayor Fritz Kuhn (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen).

With the publication of the figures, the citizens’ initiative “Aufbruch Stuttgart“, which in the past had spoken out against the extensive redevelopment and in favour of a new building, has also spoken out again. Wieland Backes of the association described one billion euros as “indecently high costs”. The group is now calling for a citizens’ survey on the subject of whether the opera project has been democratic enough from their point of view so far.
