BACKDancers, composers and LSO musicians release films inspired by lockdown London
Musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra have teamed up with filmmakers and composers to create two new films inspired by London’s experience of lockdown. The resulting films have now been released on Culture Mile’s YouTube channel, featuring performances by violinist Maxine Kwok and flautist Gareth Davies. Recorded during the second lockdown in the City of London, the films are centred around premieres of new music by composers Jasmin Kent Rodgman and Darren Bloom.
Antonia Luxem’s film focuses on violinist Maxine Kwok and Rising, the new work by Darren Bloom. Filmed on the 34th floor of 100 Bishopsgate, Kwok is depicted in front of the view of the City skyline at twilight, accompanied by dancer Marie Astrid Mence.
Grütters: Kultur hat Schlüsselrolle für vitale EU
Nach dem Treffen einer europäischen Ministerrunde hat Kulturstaatsministerin Monika Grütters die Bedeutung der Kultur für Europa betont. Dem Kultur- und Mediensektor komme eine Schlüsselrolle für eine vitale Europäische Union zu, sagte die CDU-Politikerin am Dienstag nach der Videokonferenz, an der auch EU-Kulturkommissarin Marija Gabriel teilnahm.
Engagement und Kreativität der Beschäftigten trügen maßgeblich zum Zusammenwachsen Europas und zu seiner wirtschaftlichen Dynamik bei. «Durch die Pandemie wird dies nun umso offensichtlicher», sagte Grütters laut Mitteilung. «Wie kaum ein anderer Bereich leidet die Kunst- und Kulturszene unter den Folgen der Pandemie, vielfach durchgehend seit dem Frühjahr.» Deshalb sei es wesentlich, dass der Sektor an den europäischen Wiederaufbaumaßnahmen teilhabe – «auch, um die kulturelle und mediale Infrastruktur erhalten zu können».

The culture and media sector has a key role to play for a vital European Union, said the CDU politician on Tuesday after the video conference, which was also attended by EU Commissioner for Culture Marija Gabriel.
The commitment and creativity of the workforce is a key factor in Europe’s integration and economic dynamism. “The pandemic makes this all the more obvious now”, said Grütters, according to the Communication. “The art and culture scene is suffering more than almost any other sector from the consequences of the pandemic, in many cases continuously since spring. It is therefore essential that the sector participates in the European reconstruction effort – “also in order to preserve the cultural and media infrastructure”.
Un calendrier de l’avent dédié aux compositrices
Afin de faire mieux connaître les œuvres oubliées dues à des compositrices, l’association Elles creative women propose de découvrir chaque jour une courte pièce enregistrée spécialement pour l’occasion.
Après le festival Un temps pour elles, organisé en partenariat avec le château Rosa Bonheur cet été, et le lancement base de données « Demandez à Clara », voici une nouvelle occasion de découvrir les compositrices grâce à un calendrier de l’avent original. À l’initiative de l’association Elles creative women, il met à l’honneur vingt-quatre « pépites musicales, dont plus de la moitié sont des œuvres totalement inédites », d’une durée de 2 à 5 minutes. Une trentaine d’artistes, parmi lesquels Dana Ciocarlie, David Kadouch, Karine Deshayes, Xavier Philips, Marie-Josèphe Jude et bien d’autres, redonneront vie à des pages pour la plupart rares, évitant les figures les plus célèbres — pas de Clara Schumann, ni de Fanny Mendelssohn, pas d’Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre ni de Barbara Strozzi —, faisant la part belle aux XIXe et XXe siècles et s’ouvrant à la création contemporaine.
An Advent calendar dedicated to female composers
In order to raise awareness of forgotten works by female composers, the association Elles creative women offers to discover a short piece recorded especially for the occasion every day.
After the festival Un temps pour elles, organised in partnership with the Château Rosa Bonheur this summer, and the launch of the “Ask Clara” database, here is a new opportunity to discover women composers thanks to an original advent calendar. At the initiative of the association Elles creative women, it features twenty-four “musical nuggets, more than half of which are completely new works”, lasting from 2 to 5 minutes. Around thirty artists, including Dana Ciocarlie, David Kadouch, Karine Deshayes, Xavier Philips, Marie-Josèphe Jude and many others, will bring back to life pages that are mostly rare, avoiding the most famous figures – no Clara Schumann, no Fanny Mendelssohn, no Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre or Barbara Strozzi -, giving pride of place to the 19th and 20th centuries and opening up to contemporary creation.
