Composer Jacob Mühlrad releases collaboration with Swedish House Mafia

House music group Swedish House Mafia have released a symphonic interpretation of their 2010 club classic One (Your Name). The re-worked One Symphony was created in collaboration with 30-year-old Swedish composer Jacob Mühlrad.

Swedish House Mafia announced the release of the single via twitter on New Year’s Day alongside a screenshot of all three band members on a video call with a beaming Mühlrad.

The youngest composer ever to have his work performed at The Royal Swedish Opera, Mühlrad is the second Swede in history be published by influential classical music label, Deutsche Grammophon. His debut album with the label included substantial choral work Time (2018), which explored the word ‘time’ in 27 different languages.

Komische Oper: James Gaffigan wird Generalmusikdirektor

Der US-Amerikaner James Gaffigan wird neuer Generalmusikdirektor der Komischen Oper in Berlin. Er werde den Posten mit Beginn der Spielzeit 2023/2024 übernehmen, teilte das Opernhaus am Dienstag mit. Sein Vertrag läuft dann bis zum Sommer 2027. Gaffigan zähle zu den herausragenden Dirigenten seiner Generation und werde «vor allem für seine natürliche Leichtigkeit und zwingende Musikalität gefeiert».

James Gaffigan Appointed General Music Director of Komische Oper

American conductor James Gaffigan will be the new General Music Director of the Komische Oper in Berlin. He will take up the post at the beginning of the 2023/2024 season. His contract will then run until the summer of 2027. Gaffigan is considered one of the outstanding conductors of his generation and is “celebrated above all for his natural ease and compelling musicality”.

Victoires de la musique classique : les nommés du cru 2022 dévoilés

La cérémonie se déroulera en mars au Grand Théâtre de Provence, à Aix. Sabine Devieilhe, Sol Gabetta, Benoît Menut : découvrez les noms en lice pour cette 29ème édition.

La catégorie Soliste instrumental fait cette année la part belle aux cordes, avec deux violoncellistes, Emmanuelle Bertrand et Sol Gabetta, ainsi que le jeune violoniste Théotime Langlois de Swarte. Ce dernier est d’ailleurs le seul à être nommé à deux reprises avec son disque The Mad Lover, cité dans la catégorie “Enregistrement”, en collaboration avec le luthiste Thomas Dunford. L’autre catégorie reine, “Artiste lyrique”, verra elle s’affronter trois sommités : Sabine Devieilhe, Barbara Hannigan et Ludovic Tézier.

The 2022 nominees of the Victoires de la Musique Classique

The ceremony for the 2022 Victoires de la Musique Classique will take place in March at the Grand Théâtre de Provence, in Aix. Sabine Devieilhe, Sol Gabetta, Benoît Menut are the names in the running for this 29th edition.

This year’s category “Instrumental Soloist” is dedicated to strings, with two cellists, Emmanuelle Bertrand and Sol Gabetta, as well as the young violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte. The latter is the only one to be nominated twice with his record The Mad Lover, cited in the “Recording” category, in collaboration with the lutenist Thomas Dunford. The other main category, “Lyric Artist”, will see three great artists compete: Sabine Devieilhe, Barbara Hannigan and Ludovic Tézier.

New First Conductor in Komische Oper

In addition to naming James Gaffigan as its new general music director, Komische Oper Berlin has announced a new First Conductor as of 2022-23, one season ahead of Gaffigan.

She is German conductor Erina Yashima, current assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In Berlin, she’ll be succeeding Canadian conductor Jordan de Souza, in the job for three years.

Yashima’s schedule this season includes debuts with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, and the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, among others, and she’ll be in the pit for the Washington National Opera‘s new production of Cosi fan butte in March.
