4th November: Glass Marcano – a modern fairytale, Moritz Eggert new President, Music charity announces free access

Glass Marcano, a modern fairy tale of classical music

This young Venezuelan conductor caused a sensation at the La Maestra conductor’s competition last September. Determined, charismatic and passionate, she broke down cultural, social and linguistic barriers.

In a very short time, her life has changed completely. In Venezuela, Glass Marcano juggled law studies, night classes to become a conductor and a job as a fruit seller in the family shop. Two days later, there she was on the stage of the Philharmonie conducting Claire Gibault’s Paris Mozart Orchestra.

Glass Marcano (Gladys-Marli Vadel de Marcano on civil status) has plenty of determination. In deciding to apply for the La Maestra competition, reserved for female conductors, she is not yet aware of the test it will be for her. First difficulty: the registration fee of 150 euros. Since the financial crisis in Venezuela, the average salary is 2.5 dollars and Glass Marcano does not have sufficient financial resources. Anyway, she sets up a kitty and asks her network to feed it. To be able to apply, she also has to send in a video in which she conducts an orchestra. Glass Marcano asks her music teachers to help her make this video.

Moritz Eggert new President

As the German Composers’ Association announced on Tuesday, Moritz Eggert was unanimously elected as the new president on Friday by the Federal Board of DKV. Vice-President Ralf Weigand, who had taken over the chairmanship on an interim basis, is delighted with this strong vote: “A good day for the numerous composers of all genres in the country, who are not exactly showered with good news at the moment. With his élan and eloquence, Moritz will represent our concerns prominently in politics and society and contribute to ensuring that the relevance and role of music authors as the initial creators of all music is socially understood and appropriately classified.

Moritz Eggert was already a member of the DKV’s Executive Board from 2004 to 2007 and has been a member of GEMA’s Federal Expert Committee “Music Authors” since 2008. Since 2010 he has been professor of composition at the Munich University of Music and Theatre and is a passionate supporter of the younger generation of composers.

“I am very pleased to take over the office of DKV President with immediate effect at the request of the Executive Board, which my esteemed predecessor Enjott Schneider made available for private reasons,” said Moritz Eggert.

Music charity announces free access to group programme for UK state schools

Orchestras for All (OFA) has announced that it will provide free access to its Modulo Programme for state secondary schools for one year, offering a programme of group music-making support which usually costs £300 per year. The national music education charity’s Modulo Programme helps teachers working in state secondary schools to set up a small ensemble – a ‘Modulo’ – and make music together, combining all instruments and abilities.

In response to the challenges of Covid-19, this year’s programme focuses on supporting teachers to facilitate continued music-making in schools by providing the following:

  • Rehearsal resources including plans, videos, and backing tracks
  • Online rehearsals sessions and masterclasses from BBC Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and City of London Sinfonia
  • Attendance at virtual and (Covid-19 restriction-pending) in-person pop-up orchestra days
  • New ensemble arrangements with parts for all instruments and skill levels
  • Support for ensemble leadership skills

OFA executive director Nick Thorne said, ‘With Covid-19 having radically changed the music-making landscape, music departments across the country are currently facing huge challenges to play music together safely. We also recognise that financial constraints remain as one of the main barriers to participation in the arts.
