The strikes cost the Paris Opera €2.5 million in one week

A total of fifteen opera and ballet performances have been canceled at the Opéra Bastille and Palais Garnier since Thursday, December 5, the date on which the mobilization against the pension reform began. The cancellation of an opera such as Le Prince Igor in Bastille, for example, represents an average of €358,000 in lost tickets every night, the Opera told AFP. The Opera and the Comédie Française are the only cultural institutions concerned by the reform. The special regime of the Opera is one of the oldest in France, dating back to 1698, under Louis XIV. For the first time, more than a hundred dancers from the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris paraded through the streets last Thursday. Once their special fund (half financed by the State) is abolished, dancers fear that their pensions will disappear when they are 42 years old when they retire.
